x5 in limp mode - I think???

I was running down the freeway at 77mph, fairly flat, when all of the sudden I start loosing power. Originally it felt like the transmission shifted down, but I then realized it was the engine loosing power. I stopped, and the engine idles fine and even when I hit the gas, it revs to about 2000rpm then backs off. If I put it in gear, it goes, and I can manually shift thru all 5 gears. I feel a distinct shift, so I dont think it's my tranny. I tried to limp it home, and it just got worse, originally it would run to almost 2k rpm, but then got to where it would idle only. I have a service engine soon light, but no other indicator. If I shut it off and then start it up, it runs better for a few seconds, then bad again. It's got to be a sensor or possibly a fuel pump (just a gut feel).

Anyone got any ideas????

2001 X-5 4.4 sport.

Thanks.

Usually you would have an error (engine failsafe) before it would go into limp mode.
I wonder if it's a plugged fuel filter?

But, it was a big initial hit, not gradual, then gradually got worse real fast. Doesn't seem like a filter, unless the pump sucked up something all at once.

Check that code. Nothing else to suggest without them.

Mine did that about 2 years ago, all iI could manage was 100km if I nursed it along had about 500km to get home. The trans felt like it was shifting all over the place used fuel like it was going out of fashon. I replaced the fuel filter, no fault lights came on. I took it into BMW and tested it, Faulty Air Flow Meter

I concur with Slick, code would put us in a direction instead of a motor tear
down.

This isn't a turbo, so probably not the same thing.

I'll get the codes read and see what I can find.

The "used a lot of fuel" comment reminded me, it was using an extreme amount of fuel when limping along.

OK I read the codes: P0491, P0492, P0440, P0171, P0174.

491 and 492 are same code, different bank - secondary air injection system
171 and 174 are same code, different bank - system too lean
440 - evporative emission system

I would guess the the first 2 sets of codes are related to each other, and most likely the 440 code is too. But, what do I look for now??

Those codes in combo normally lead to a vacuum leak somewhere. Thinks to check are:

MAF
Vacuum hoses
Air intake tube
Gaskets (Manifold)
Valve cover. (Normally a leak can form in the rear corner)

Start there since those are the easiest to trace. Someone will also offer some more helpful hints.
