Question Transfer case problems 2005 4.4i auto

Long time user of xoutpost but first post. I have 2005 x5 4.4i auto. My transmission feels like it is slipping in every gear except first. I have read many posts with similar problems. I'm thinking its the clutches in the transfer case. I have unplugged the actuator and it shifts fine. Plug it back in and it feels like its slipping. Does my x5 have clutches in transfer case or is it a chain? And if it has clutches can they be replaced? I have changed transfer case oil and front diff. Both looked and smelled burnt. TC was the worst. I put the correct oil in. What else could be the problem?

Did you change the ATF? Sounds like the trans was abused.

I have 04 4.4.. Similar symptoms as you. Actually, basically the same symptoms. It was my transfer case entirely. Either rebuild or replace it. Car feels great now.

Do you get sort of a studder when accelerating?

Oh also, I had my TC actuator motor replaced first to see if it fixed problem, when it didn't, I did full TC. Cost me $3500 at BMW

I'd take a look at the TC Actuator motor and see if the plastic gear is stripped. If it's bad, check out this web site for a replacement gear, (much cheaper than replacing the entire unit):

Odometer Gears

I have replaced the gear in the actuator although it didn't need one. Does my model x5 have clutches in the TC or a chain?

Also my back driver side air suspension is leaking when car is off. Is there anyway to patch it up?

Yes it does fill like a shudder when accelerating. The harder I push it the more noticeable it is.

You have to replace the airbags. Do a search, I think there's a DIY

Unfortunately, it sounds like you need a new TC. Go to a tranny shop or reputable Indy..
