I know....we love fixing our SAVs.....

Unfortunately....an experienced AC technician with the right tools.....will solve the AC fault!

It cost me AU$100 and haven't had any issue from there on.

And kept my sanity to do other things.

As some posters said, no one came back with how they solved it? This has stumped my BMW tech, and one compressor later I have the same problem.

One note - the compressor itself starts cooling with less engine revs. Usually one rev would start the cool air flowing. Totally stumped!!!! Someone please help?

Oh and the fan not engaging, yea, there is a pressure switch on the refrigerant line, that tells when the fan should turn on. When you are low on freon, pressure switch no work so well, fan doesn't turn on.
I'm guessing more than likely this was the fix. I was only researching due to an unrelated issue but hate dead threads.

I can't count how many threads have asked questions about their "radio" or "engine"...but don't have any info as to which engine they have or which audio set-up they have.

Not to be a nick picker but there were different ac compressors used throughout the X5 line. It would help if you know which compressor you have or at the very least tell us which X5 (V8 or I6) and the model year for your car/truck.

Nope. The system has in the right amount of gas/ oil. Tested by a very qualified BMW trained tech.

2006 X5/ E53/ 3.0i/ Auto Cooling/ no navigation.

I'm not having an AC issue. Like I said it was un related but my point was the thread was left unanswered but the OP. They never reported what the fix was.
Yes some basic info in the signature is a good idea. I keep forgetting because it's the daughters car and I'm only trying to find answers on other things to help.
