Post #7 answers your inital question, how to define the problem. It's a 10 min procedure and requires a tool that costs around $20. Why guess and invest time and $s in blind parts changing? This is DIYing at its worst.

The most important step in auto repair is the first step, diagnosis.

OK so it looks like it was directly relating to the oil I had put in.
I now have Castol EDGE 5W-30.
Before I had Valvolene MAXLIFE 20W-50.
My chain on startup is much noisier now

I run 5w-40 full synthetic on my X5 with great results, you need the 5w or 0w for cold starts in our cars. 20w on cold start would definitely make it harder to crank for sure. If you get a 5w-40 weight you might have slightly less chain noise but the cold starting would be easier.

yeah I hear you, but I think I just need to bit the bullet and do the chains and vanos. more peace of mind. plus I also have a slight 'thumping' noise on one cylinder (its a very rhythmic noise but far enough apart to be 'just one cylinder')...
might be time to just remove then entire engine to do all the work...
need to do engine mounts and exhaust manifold gaskets too...

waffles... if you have a weird 'thumping' noise of ANY kind after changing over to 20-50 oil... you might want to drain that crap out and switch over to 5w40, I couldn't agree with Rickey more!

5w40 has changed the N62's look on life

ah the 20W-50 is out, but the thumping noise has been there for quite a while...even before I put the 20W-50 in. (20W-50 was only in for 5000kms too).
The M62TU does run a lot smoother with 5W-30 in BTW
Still got the thumping...

Mind you it still has stupid amounts of power and happily revs all the way to limit

With great power comes great responsibility though, make sure to take care of the internals if they are in need of attention
