Aircon Pump. Damn, bad luck comes in 3, here's my second in 2 days...
Yesterday the wife rear ended a Yaris and caused some bodywork damage needing a new wing/bonnet/light etc. I test drove the car, everything was as it should be, no rubbing anywhere, all superficial. or so we thought... Out of the blue today, when starting the car the power steering went and battery light came on Bit of troubleshooting and I found that when the A/C is on the belt is slipping, hardly moving, but moving. When A/C is on there's also a slight squeel from lower left area of the engine bay. A/c off and the fan turns, and battery light off (so alternator is ok). What's your opinion guys? Could the shunt have moved something that just needs to be re-tightened, or by coincidence a seized a/c pump. Or neither? I'm going to try this... http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...-pictures.html The car is a 2004, 3.0D with around 80k on the clock. Was perfect till the collision and had BMW Inspection II just recently. Aircon was icy cold until now. Really thanks a lot in advance if anyone can give me some advice on what else to check. Cheers, Kev. Last edited by Kev; 04-18-2013 at 01:31 PM. |

Just took the car for another test drive - airon off. At low revs (eg, reversing), the battery light comes back on and steering gets stiffer.
Hopefully this points more towards a loose belt? I'll run it to the dealer tomorrow to see what they think. If they need to tighten the tensoners would an hour of labour be about right? Hope I'm right - this will be expensive enough And the Summer 168s were just about to go on in honour of spring finally coming !!!! |

Well, it's much worse than we thought.
Seems that the damper has failed so needs to be replaced with belts, and apparantly now also a battery - Complete bill for repair €1000 The battery can wait, but I can't risk losing the waterpump or powersteering so will have to get the work done asap. I'm trying to get an idea if €700 just to change the damper and belts is reasonable. Does anyone have some experience of this? Thanks in advance. kev. |

For the collision yes, but the insurance won't want to cover the failed damper (diagnosed by BMW this morning) - looks like €750 that I need to find
Even if I argue that before the accident the car was working perfectly (aircon steering, alternator) and its a big coincidence they'll say that the impact didn't touch the engine so... ....Well i try but my worry is, what's next? |

Honestly, is this relevant to the question? I had the same kind of responses when asking how to remove the glass from my rear door.
I always post the followups even when noone is able offer help, and try to give "constructive" advice when posting to other peoples threads. My mistake - I used to think that these forums were here to help people not to point the finger laughing "where's your insurance???" - - seems that I was wrong - |

In my opinion it was the crash that caused your failure, so it was relevant to the question. Looking at the photo again, the issues could be unrelated.
What is this damper you speak of? We don't call it that in the states. Are you talking about the belt tensioner? Feel free to attack my response but considering you have 6 total posts in this thread, 5 yours, and 1 mine, I wouldn't start berating members just yet.

OK, sorry, sore subject on insurance since I moved country and lost my 11 years NCB. Anyway, one last try to get some helpful advice.
The most expensive part in the repair is a vibration damper 11238511371.` RealOEM.com * BMW E53 X5 3.0d Belt Drive-Vibration Damper Here in Italy these cost $600+ Non-oem parts like BMW Harmonic Balancer (X5 335d) - Corteco 11238511371 | FCP Euro don't offer much saving and are probably best avoided. I am trying to get the insurance to pay, but the asshole at BMW refuses to associate the failure with the collision - even if the car was perfect before the crash. I'm guessing that the impact caused something internal to this part to finally give up, that was probably on its way out anyway. Will be kinda hard to convince a loss adjuster to associate the two, but I'm going to try.... TIA for any suggestions on whether there's anyway to temporary solve the problem (eg pully adjustment) whilst wrangling with the insurers on paying for the replacement damper. I'm seeing a BMW indie mechanic tomorrow to get a second opinion Cheers, Kev. |

Correction - non-oem parts seem to be quite a bit cheaper, and a name like Bilstein should be quite reliable?
Belt Pulley, crankshaft FEBI BILSTEIN - 27340 for your car lowest prices - Engine compartment - Distribution/Bearings - Belt Pulley, crankshaft - Belt Pulley, crankshaft - 27340 Or the Corteco part is also available here Riemenscheibe, Kurbelwelle CORTECO - 80001103 für Ihr Fahrzeug zum besten Preis - Motorraum - Verteilung / Keilriemen / Laufrolle - Riemenscheibe, Kurbelwelle - Riemenscheibe, Kurbelwelle - 80001103 I know it's often a false economy, but a part like this, could be worth taking a chance on (especially the Bilstein one). Has anyone experience with either of these manufacturers? Thx. K |

I would take a chance on the aftermarket damper. It doesn't seem like these fail that often so it's likely you'll never need to replace it again. You could also look for a used part? Cheaper, and more risky.
What did the indie say?
