So I'm scratching my head I've been reading this post trying to figure out what's going on here. You built this custom harness basically allows an OE splice connection between the original male female four-pin connector for the shift cable... And you showed a picture of your harness you should have parts list with the part numbers of the connectors and the pins etc... But I'm not seeing where you explain which pins to splice in the two wires that go to the clock spring..

You have a male and female for pin connector and they are designations of pin slot 1 2 3 4... So am I missing it where you mention which pin number you splice the two wires to go to the clock spring? Or do I need to look up the pinout of the 4 pin connector to see each 2 wires see for shift up and down?

and then also on my car I have a 4.8 so I have the heated steering wheel I already have a clock spring that has the two pins present however those two pins are currently used for the heated steering wheel circuit... So that means I need to depin the heated steering wheel connector and the steering column that supplies the signal to the clock spring right?

For my main thing honestly it's just trying to figure out in this cool four-pin connector custom harness you made what's the pin out of it? He showed connectors with four pins going in and out but you didn't say which of the two pins to splice the two shift +- wires into.

Apologies if I missed it just trying to make sure I get all this right before I start on it tomorrow.

The way I did it was mounting the Earth wires from the paddles to the steering wheel body (2x earth wire, 1 each paddle. There was a small bolt in there that I used). Then there is the signal cables from the paddles, 1 each paddle. This gets connected to the steering wheel heater connector on the clockspring. (you will lose your heated steering wheel option) From the back of the steering column you will find the same type of connector that's on the front of the clockspring. From there you run 2 wires to the gear selector. Now you must splice the up and downshift wires to the car.
With my 4.4 it was like this: Blue-white= up shift blue-yellow= down shift. Not sure if it is the same for your 4.8is.

Mine has M4 paddle shifters but I'm sure it works the same way as the SMG wheel.

This has always been something that I have wanted to do but the cost of a good specimen E46 steering wheel just keeps holding me back... I must admit, out here in Ohio I do like my heated wheel... Would love to have it all, but isn’t that the crux of life...

One of these days I’ll get some hair brain idea and whoop up something! Been considering 3D printing my paddle mounts and using a small “button switch” with some self cut aluminum paddles but in light of other projects that’s been slow going.

See BMW part numbers at number 14. The harness going to the steering whee plugs in to the steering wheel shifting unit. There are no wires to splice except at the shifter. The clockspring is not involved

I did this how-to over 7 years ago so so my memory is of no help. I didn't look it up. I just did the test I mention.

and then also on my car I have a 4.8 so I have the heated steering wheel I already have a clock spring that has the two pins present however those two pins are currently used for the heated steering wheel circuit... So that means I need to depin the heated steering wheel connector and the steering column that supplies the signal to the clock spring right?Don't know. Didn't have that to deal with.

I'm left handed so pictures and words may not line up.

Apologies if I missed it just trying to make sure I get all this right before I start on it tomorrow.
Hope that helps.

Way back then I paid $200 for a steering wheel on Ebay. I did a little work on it and it was as good as new.

That’s where I’m leaning, find a decent one on eBay, snag it, refurbish as needed and go to work... as soon as I am reemployed from my company collapsing from Covid...

I’ll get there!

Thanks guys, it turned out to be PIN 2 and 3 ok the 4 pin connector for the shift up and down signals.

It's working now and well. I appreciate the help!!

I think I used a kit from Mr. Leather to refurbish it.

Awesome I added that to my watch list I'll probably pick one up later just to clean up my wiring.
