"running out" of gas at around the 20L mark (M62)

well it seems my problem with the car not starting up was related to fuel. at the 20L mark (using the fuel gauge), nothing is coming in to the fuel pump. The roadside assistance guy put in more gas (maybe 5-8 liters worth) and it started nicely and we've been driving it here and there.

I filled it up and I only put in around 60L. so there is around 20L gas there before.

Any ideas what could be causing it?

thanks

my rucks has been shutting off around 1/4 of a tank.. been like that for years..i always fill up right before i hit the 1/4 mark... i think its something to do with a pump that brings gas from one side to the other or something like that.. im sure someone will chime in that know much more then me..

See this thread: http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...ps-really.html
I suspect a poor connection between the left and ride side of the tank, or possibly somehow a clog in #3 of the diagram. Or even #6 (suction jet pump) itself could be bad. I remember replacing #6 in an X5 many years ago (2004?) for a similar problem, I think there was a kink/collapse in the hose.
No matter what, the fuel tank needs to be opened to see what's going on. And #6 is a PITA to change. I did it with the tank still installed, it would be a cinch if the tank was removed first

If you run OBC TEST 6 (you did unlock your instrument cluster, right?)...you can check your fuel level sensors to see if one of them may be the culprit...they send the data to the IKE as far as the amount of fuel you see on the fuel gauge.

There are 2 displays for TEST 6...the second display should end in PHASE 1 if both fuel sensors are okay.

See the info under TEST 6 in the 4th image below if my comments above don't make sense:

(in this pic below, you can see that I have 2.8 liters of gas on the left side of the fuel tank & 35.2 liters on the right side...for an approx total of 38.1 liters left in the trunk)

Here's an example of what you should see (if you have the high instrument cluster) & both fuel level sensors are working correctly

Yes, that is the procedure...except I always suggest to turn the ignition to position 1 (instead of position 2)...that way you don't have to FASTEN YOUR SEATBELT.

Here are the instructions again for anyone else who hasn't unlocked their cluster yet:
