Caliper Guide Pin Bushings
Just did a brake job on the X last weekend and replaced all 4 pads/rotors. While replacing the front passenger brakes found out that the cap for the lower guide pin was missing and not having the part on hand I ordered it online. So the part comes in this week and when I tried to put in on the guide pin bushing seems to have expanded and the cap went right into the bushing instead of fitting on it. So long story short it looked like I needed to replace the bushing itself and went to NAPA auto parts since I have heard they carry OE parts for BMW but ended up getting a NAPA brand bushing instead. Got home took the tire and caliper off and was going to remove the old bushing but decided to double check the part I got and it doesn't seem to resemble the old one. I have attached an image of the part I got and would appreciate if someone could take a second look and see I am missing anything. Also I have read that the new bushing gets installed from the inside of the caliper. Is that right? Further more I tried to place the cap and it wouldn't fit either end of the NAPA bushing. Thank you |

Are you talking about the rubber dust cap??
Thats all they are. The guide pin bushings are the metal pins... most people dont have them on. there is about 10mm of space between the face of the opening and the face of the bolt, so other than dirt and grime, they can be exposed.

To the OP: In your picture of the bushing, the right half is what goes into the bore on the caliper. They're simply a push in bushing, and the expanded lip in the end is what prevents it from coming back out. They usually require some squishing and finessing to fit in. The bushings are pretty flexible...so again with the dust cap it may be a bit tight. Whether or not thats the "correct" bushing though.....its easy enough to pull out the old ones and compare.
