Mysterious plastic tube/hose.

I have this tube/hose in my 4.8iS that connect to nothing in the engine bay. It runs all the way down below the engine. I've yet to find out where the other end plug into. I've been searching online but have no answer.
This is the picture of the hose with the exact same question on xbimmers but there was no reply there. http://www.xbimmers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=653397

Looking on realOEM, It look like the final drive (front-axle) vent pipe, part# 31507524550

What do you think? If it is, why does it have to be all the way to the top in the engine bay?

That's the vent tube to the transmission. It should clip to the fuel vent valve. and the end will be open.

it is going to the top of the engine in an attempt to create an upward draft - just like the old fashion smokestacks on the factories were built tall, to create that upward natural draft... not sure how a foot (or two) long pipe can create a measurable draft but that is the only plausible explanation of the pipe opening to the top and not to the bottom...

Yeah its a breather hose for the tranny. Doesn't connect to anything. It goes commando style.

When I replaced my OSV and hoses a few weeks back, I almost freaked when I found it on my M54. Took me two days of asking techs here at the plant to get a good answer.

Thx for asking, TMV. I was looking at that tube too, but was busy with other stuff, so I forgot to ask. Now I have the answer as well.
