Looking to buy a car across the country

Hey Guys! Was looking to trade my car for a 4.8is but didn't get too much interest so now i found one that I really like that is in Chicago while I am in NY. I was planning to fly out there check out the car and drive it back. The dealer claims to have put the car through a 36point inspection and that its all originial paint including bumpers etc. The carfax shows all service has been done on the car minus the cooling system which I can do later this year. Other then that what else should I ask before booking the flight. I have a very busy schedule and would hate to go out there wasting time. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

Imo, find a poster near the proposed car and have him eyeball it/drive it...better yet, have someone local show 'serious' interest, and have it driven over to a good Indie for a PPI, vs 'the dealer sez..."

If you were buying from a private party, they would expect you to push for the above I suspect. Though some have bought used from long distances, they tended to be from private parties as opposed to a dlr of any ilk.

It's a lot of dough; I would want to be more secure in the knowledge of that used mail order bride, imo.

You may want to contact a local highly recommended BMW Indy and have them take the X to their shop to check it out.

I would also check on a car collectable car hauler. As long as you wait for a load coming your way it will likely save you time and money to have it trucked to your door in an enclosed hauler. I have done so several times and if absolutely no problems.

Have a PPI done on the potential car at a BMW dealer or Indy shop, and base your negotiation on it. Only book the flight after everything done and agreed upon.
I bought my 4.8iS at the beginning of June, in Chicago. Another member on here had the PPI performed on it and decided to pass. I shared the cost of his PPI so I had the information. I got in contact with the seller and agree on everything before booking my flight. I flew there, check the car out in person one last time. Completed the paper works and drive it straight home in 11 hours.
I wouldn't call Chicago to New York across-the-country, however Bringing the car home from the other coast is another story.

Thanks for all the help guys I appreciate it. What is the typical cost of a PPI? Does a dealer typically agree to going through the trouble without leaving a deposit or should that be done before?

If you are really want the X, I suggest you offer a deposit refundable based on the PPI.

^This.
Most sellers would agree to bring the car in for the PPI. After all, you are the one who pay for the PPI. The cost varies between $250-$550. You need to be the one who schedule the PPI, so you would know up front.

Left a refundable deposit for dealer to put the car on hold. Car is located in Houston Texas actually. I called a few BMW dealers and none do PPI due to insurance reasons as they state. I'm going to be calling Bavarian Machine Specialty in the morning and see it they can do it. The car does come with a 4500 mile Powertrain warranty. Ride home is roughly 1600 miles. If all goes well I'll be flying the gf out with me for the scenic ride back. Any other advice or recommendations feel free to share. Car is located in 77094 zipcode.

how did a chicago car turn up in TX? and the warranty - does it cover the car at any dealer of your choice, or only at the selling dealer in IL? or TX?

you can put a shipping bid on uship com, and choose a winning bidder, if you desire so...
