Let it drain for about 1.5 hours so it was not even dripping anymore. 8.5 quarts got me to the high line on the dipstick.

Thanks all.

Many brands meet the BMW specifications. Choose whichever one you like and stick with it. But as you requested, I have always used Royal Purple. You can expect several other swear by answers and 'reasons' why some choices are inferior oils.

Gothcha. I used Mobil 1 fully synthetic in my previous 4.4's. (5w-30).

In my S62 it requires 10w/60 which I use audi oil from the dealer, since it's made by castrol.

The "new" X5 4.6 happily comes with a record book since new, so ill probably stick to whatever the original owner used. 5k is the interval he was on with the V2 SC.

I just changed the oil on my 03 4.6is. Used Mobil 1 High Mileage 10W40 fully synthetic, roughly 8 quarts.

Thinking of adding a bottle of Liqui Moly Motor Oil Saver (300ml). Should I add another half quart of 10W40 just to be safe?

If you also changed the filter, the total, including any additive should total 8.5 quarts. Don't overfill. If the total amount of oil and additive is less than 8.5 quarts you can add what is needed to fill to proper amount. However, it won't hurt anything to leave it half a quart low and add oil when it is a quart low.
