Stutter in 2nd gear now. Transfer case? Opinions please before I push it off a cliff

Well I have yet another issue. I have a stutter in 2nd gear only. It's not an engine stutter, feels like its beneath me and more mechanical rather than the engine dropping out. I seemed to notice it after a had the typical hard slam when coming to a rolling stop and quickly accelerating again. I usually anticipate this but I didn't on this occasion. It slammed hard (which I remember reading is a transfer case issue). Now I notice the stuttering in 2nd gear. Mostly at low speed, low rpms, light-normal acceleration.

Could this be a transfer case, trans, or tq converter issue? No lights on the dash.want to get some direction before it gets worse.

Thanks for any input!

That symptom is usually a transmission issue. Has the fluid ever been drained/refilled with a filter change and pan mag inspection/cleaning?

I had the same issue, I took the car to a local indy german mechanic.

he replaced the pan gasket, trans filter, all fluid and even flushed the torque converter to get all the fluid out. My car has driven and shifted perfectly since. The slam from a rolling stop is gone as well.

My local indy charged 419 bucks, which includes the OE filter, pan gasket and fluid along with labor. Best 400 bucks I've ever spent on a car. Felt like a new car after.

BMW won't do a trans maint drain/fill/filter. They say lifetime (100k miles) and let the trans go until failure then replace (over $7000).

My trans was drain/filter/filled at 100k miles, 175k now and still operating great (even with thousands of miles of severe towing, 6k lbs in stop/go traffic at temps over 100 deg F with A/C on max).

Prof, when the stuttering happens, lightly depress the brake pedal and continue driving. If the stuttering goes away it is your torque converter.

The following is a summary of transmission issues that may be helpful: http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...s-summary.html

also, check guibo - while your issue doesn't sound like one but it is a cheap diag - lift the car, look at the guibo, if cracked, then replace... shouldn't run you more than a $100 total...

Thanks guys. I took it to a Indy trans shop that does work on bmws. They road tested it and said there is something wrong in the second drum. They also said they have fixed they 1-2 slam and will take care of it. My symptoms weren't strong today since it was warmer outside. I don't know if that tells me anything.

In the past year I have replaced valve gaskets, ccvs, plugs, battery, tail light, headlight bulbs, tires (only lasted 20k because of rear camber), termostat, water pump, and actuator gear. That's all I can think of just in this past year.
I still have a drivers seat with a hole on it from the seat heater wire burning through it. Have had that fixed as it will be another $400.

Did they check the color and smell of the fluid?
