Don't worry, I am not taking the vehicle until it I'd perfect and then will probably still have to get rid of it. Too much to be concerned about.

No Memphis Moterwerkes did not do the work. Another Indy shop in town did the work and came highly recommended. I won't throw them under the bus just yet. If it does not all work out...well then that is a different story.

I have a 2002 4.6is w/ 135k on it. Engine runs great but my transmission keeps going into "TRANS FAILSAFE PROG". I'm considering pulling both the engine and trans, and putting in a LS1/6L80E and make it rear wheel drive only.

Engine got brand new water pump, thermostat, A/C inter-cooler thermostat, cooling hoses, belts and radiator (original radiator had a crack and was leaking). I decided to replace everything else cooling related as preventative maintenance.

A few months ago I replaced the valve cover gaskets and spark plugs. Valve covers were black powder coated while I had them off.

I was about to start doing some research into what it might be worth. Looks like there are a few links in this thread to get me started.

I'm hoping the sale of the engine/trans/front drivetrain would mostly fund the LS1 swap.

Maybe we can work out a deal?

Just out of curiousity, I have been reading some post on what needs to be done when the timing chain guides explode. Since the shop did not pull the oil pump and thus all of my current problems should I assume they did not drop the oil pan as well. Also, when doing the timing chains with 180,000 miles on the clock, should the shop be smart enough :-) to check the VANOS while it was right there in front of them.

After listening to some audio and videos the noise mine is making could be from the VANOS. The shop will start putting on new heads on Thursday but I am afraid that is not really the issue. Since the engine got hot and no oil I am sure it is a safe bet to replace them but not all that excited to see the shop may have missed some basic repairs when doing the other work.

Thoughts?

I love my X but I may have to get rid of it after all of this so I will have some peace of mind and start over.

check the inventory at bmrparts.com, a big Cali source of used parts. You will be less certain of condition, but probably more likely the shop will foot the bill for a comparable mileage engine than a new for bmw 'rebuilt'

UPDATE: Need a used engine

So I went and looked at the X last Thursday and it appeared to finally be running correctly. No more engine knock or lifter noise. When the shop got the head off on the drivers side, the lifter had punched a hole in it.

You would expect with new heads and lifters that it would be good and all appeared well in the life of the 4 month oddessy of having it fixed. Yes 4 months.

I went on Friday to pick it up and found about 2 quarts of oil on the ground. The shop assured me that it was from another car. Well to shorten the long story i took it back Friday afternoon as it kept pooling under the car. They finally found a leak where the tore a gasket where the dipstick tube goes and repaired it yesterday.

So last night in the rain I picked it up and all seemed well.......

It is now being towed from the side of the interstate since it shut down on me without any warning and no lights or codes flashing. I did open the hood and it appeared it was leaking fuel all over the engine from the back drivers side.

And so it begins again. Think it is time the shop paid me for it and we moved on. Don't see how I could ever sell it now that they have continually messed it up or allow my wife or daughter to even think about taking it out for a drive.

The Lord must be teaching me I need to be more patient....I get it!

Shawn

Wow this sucks. I'd tell them to take it off my hands for fair market value (running properly) or talk to the media when you call your local network media on your side outlet.

I'd say it was your Wife and daughter & 3 Nuns going to Church stuck in a hurricane etc.

Good luck & I think you are very patient!

Wow- unbelievable. I agree with what was posted earlier; since everything other than the engine is in very good shape, how it would be an ideal candidate for a LSX swap- but totally understandable that you want to wash your hands of it. Not an impressive batting avg for this shop...

Ok, shop called and the vehicle is ready. A fuel line had become disconnected and therefore no gas = no power.

Seriously! I guess an engine fire would have been the icing on the cake. Going to drive it and see what happens.
