can aftermarket HIDs be used for fog lights

So im thinkin to get this nice HID set from a local seller. They got a 5 yr warranty and are high quality but i heard they can cause errors. Is that true or are they ok to use on my 2006 X5 4.4i? Before anyone says "dont do it your gonna blind traffic" or "thats so ricey" i do vehicle recovery also some of the backroads round here are really friggen dark so id like to have HIDs in the fogs. Is there anything special i gotta buy?

I'm running a HID kit in place of the standard fog light bulbs. I love them for the matching look to the headlights BUT in the UK they aren't meant to be used so I tend to only use them for shows etc and on very rare occasions. They do help light up the road though.

Please do NOT stick an arc lamp into a reflector housing. That's something kept for the ricer crowd. The proper way to go about upgrading the fogs to HID's is a projector fog retrofit from the pre-facelift models. I recommend searching out the projector fog thread and reading through it as it has plenty of valuable information....otherwise ya better don some Nomex.

Ricky Bobby will become famous soon enough
For the facelift if you are going to run HID in the fogs I'd recommend retrofitting factory Valeo projector housings first, and running a properly spec'ed H3C kit from Morimoto sold from The Retrofit Source.

Sticking an H11 kit in the 03-06 reflector fog housings looks like shit and basically tells proper lighting people that you're taking a shortcut, do it right or do it twice.

My Valeo projector fogs work amazing and give a proper beam pattern without blinding traffic, and match my Philips 85122 bulbs as I bought them in 4300k.

Also remember that our "fog lights" aren't low to the ground like many other models, they are up high and basically driving lights so making sure you aren't glaring the shit out of people is very courteous.

right I know that, the PIAAs i got on there now already get people to flash me, the HID fogs in the stock projectors im probably going to be using for a while (its just for the backroads, off road or when I get that SOB who wants to go 30 in a 55, or doesnt want to move for the wig wags). I will be buying projector housings soon so I can use the fogs on the street
