M62tu motor swap

So a friend just picked up an 01 x5 4.4. Alpine over tan. It has a junk motor. So the plan is to swap a spare motor I have sitting around. It's from an 01 740 though.
I've heard the oil pan/pump is different and needs to be swapped. And I suspect the osv setup as well. Since the 7 uses an internally mounted osv and the x is external.

Any other tips before I get started? I hope to be getting the x here sometime this week. The new motor already has new guides, but will be getting all new seals and gaskets before going in. Worth getting a new oil pump since I'll be swapping it out anyway? Any other x specific parts that should be done "while I'm in there"?

So the x got dropped off today. I'll grab some pics tomorrow, but when cracking it over, it pisses oil on the ground. I'm thinking broken block or passenger side upper timing cover.

Also noticed the rear end is ridin low. Gonna need to see if its both shocks, or a bad line or pump.
I'm gonna tear it apart a bit tomorrow but the major work will have to wait till my 6 speed swap on the 7 is done.

Here's the x's ride height compared to my x.

Pardon the dust. Both x's are dirty
Here's the only pic I have so far. I'll get more tomorrow. Looks like an aftermarket front bumper. Has cut outs for pdc, but doesn't actually have it. It'll need a drivers side mirror too. It has the auto dim glass. The one with the black surround. Thought that implied it had power folds, but there is no switch on the drivers door.
All in all, it's a good candidate for saving.

So. Just a quick thought. Would it be easier to just swap heads? I have started on the job today. Pull most of the front of the engine bay apart. I have the doner motor waiting for a few new parts. But I got to thinking, it's going to be a royal pain to deal with pulling the trans bolts and separating the motor from trans and messing with the front half shafts.
Any thoughts or experance with just swapping the good heads from the e38 m62tu onto the x5's m62tu? And obviously replacing the timing chain guides at the same time.

Depends on what went wrong with the original motor and how many miles were on it...

How many miles on the 'new' motor?

Unsure of miles. Previous owner paid to have a replacement motor put in due to failed guides. Replacement motor started making the same noise a short while after and had the guides fail and skip time. So, valves bent. Turns out the person who put the motor in didn't tighten the tensioner enough. It had backed out causing the chain to slacken and skip time. I found it sitting on top of the motor mount.
The replacement motor has 145k on it and new guides. Was just thinking if I just swap heads then I don't need to mess with the transmission.
Anyone here ever pulled a motor or maybe just the trans? Any idea how much of a pain it is?
I've done several on an e38. And it sucked.

You could always pull off the head where it came through and see what the pistons / walls looks like...

pulling the motor is a very large undertaking in your garage ( unless your garage has a lift and endless supply of labor and tools

Here's where I'm at now.
Owner will be here this weekend to help with the pull. I think I'm just gonna yank it.
