Performance parts for 01 x5 4.4i

What can I do to make my 01 BMW x5 4.4i a bit faster? Nothing that breaks the bank like the Dinan supercharger that costs 15k+ just affordable things that add good horsepower little by little it'll add up let me know your thoughts I'm not looking to make this thing a 500 hp vehicle but you know what I mean

It's an NA motor, you can do the regular 3 mods but you'll maybe net 4-5% gains if that.

Software tune (Dinan, ESS, etc), fresh air intake (AFE), and performance exhaust (Remus, Eisenmann, Billy Boat), would be your normal progression.

Any more power needed and you'll need to delete the cats and do headers, or go to forced induction.

I have an 02 4.4 and it's pretty fast. I'm the first one to make something go faster but this is quick enough, trust me I drive fast.

I was watching a show...5th Gear I think and they were doing things to the AVERAGE used car to get more power...each thing they did they would go to a dyno. They did all the bolt on cheap stuff.

The largest HP gain was running a can of fuel injector cleaner in one tank of fuel. Netted back something like 8-10 or more RWHP it lost. I know it sounds funny but try that first. My 4.4 is a REAL fast off the line and top end. Your not going to beat a new Corvette but it's probably faster than 90% of the non blown stock street cars on the road.

Bav Auto sells things like hotter coils and wires they claim boost torque and HP but don't say how much. Same with cold air intake, exhaust ect.

Hey Ricky how much horsepower will all that get me ? My x5 right now is pushing 290 hp I want to atleast get it to 350 possibly how can I go about doing that? Let me know any one thanks! Yeah I would assume a corvette wasn't someone to try to race but I have raced a few chargers not the srt8 but regular ones and I pretty much smoke them same with other cars except high end ones.

Carlos you aren't going to get a 20% gain unless you go forced induction. 290 to 350 = 60 hp = 20% gain.

Period. The NA mods I posted might net you 15 hp

Thanks Ricky, How much would the forced induction cost me ? What do you think the ball park price wise is for afe intake, and the other 2 mods you said I could do?

The least expensive route to get to 350HP or more is to add nitrous and low restriction exhaust. To minimize the chance of detonation include meth injection with a controller.

Exhausts are expensive for the E53, I love Eisenmann but they cost at least a grand more than other brands.

You can get Remus and Billy Boat exhaust for approx $1200 or so.
Supersprint axle-back exhaust is right around $1500-1600 depending where you buy from.

AFE Intake - Probably can get it for around $250 or so, Part #51-10681 for the Pro Dry S kit (I don't recommend the Pro 5R because of the oiled filter)

Software - I don't know much about the M62 tunes, but a Dinan Stage 1 tune will run you $399 plus half hour of labor from a Dinan dealer, and they claim 9 hp and 11 ft lbs at the crank with the tune alone.

Combine the intake and exhaust gains you MAY get 20 hp out of it all.

20 hp = $2,500, that's more than $100 per hp gain. Up to you if its worth it.

You could also try to save some money on the exhaust and get a 4.8iS exhaust used off a wrecked X5, as the pipe diameter is bigger than the 4.4 and 3.0 models and you'll see some hp gains from reduced backpressure and better flow. I know I felt some gains in not only pep when I got the 4.8iS exhaust installed on mine, but I also got some mpg gain believe it or not. I have an AFE intake too and I'm happy with it, I'll probably get a Shark Injector tune for my 3.0 next year.

But like I said earlier, anything higher and you'll need either nitrous or boost.

BMW rated the 2001 M62 @ 282 HP (OPs). The later M62s were rated 290 HP.

Thanks everyone for the info, I'm going to debate it I don't know if I'm willing to spend 2500 for 20hp, I think I will just do the afe intake and the exhaust depending how much I can get one for and I'll think about the software tune. in going to check into how much nitrous would cost me but I don't think I'll go with it unless it's not so pricey, thanks a lot
