But that's not what I was asking about. The person I questioned said to be careful while driving. THAT I (still) cannot see.

Meanwhile, I did wash the X5, secure, cut and arrange 44 roses into vases around the house for my wife's special day tomorrow, and prepared 4 pork shoulders for an all day smoke- a dry run for the Super Bowl. Off to the birthday dinner!

Awesome. I am glad they worked out for you. They just weren't for me - with the way I am always popping the hatch with the keys in my pocket, I am sure we'd have trouble...... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Anyway, I bought the aftermarket struts that were suggested here and I found the ends difficult to remove/unscrew. In fact. I had to use channel locks to grip the strut rod and then unscrew the end to install the springs- more on them later. That experience made me curious. The OE struts removed from the hatch, I figured I had nothing to lose. So, I gripped the OE's with channels and twisted the other end.. and guess what? They twisted right off. Here is my original strut with 'E53 HK' in blue. and here is the end removed of the OE strut (note 11 years of dirt and grime). Easy peasy:

10 mins later, the ends were off, the springs were in, and the assembly was installed. (watch your head if you go at this alone: one strut is not enough to hold the hatch) I've had them now for about a week. Only one Costco run in that time, but it was *really* nice to walk up and drop in the stuff. There *is* quite a bit more tension shutting the trunk. I am not sure my lil wife will get it done the first time she tries. You have to push like you mean it to get it to close. Not a problem as you're kinda in the swing, anyway. I'd say it's a trade off at this early stage in the experience. I'm willing to put a but more pressure on the close for the convenience of it opening all the way. I noticed tonight when I took a picture that the springs are blue. Other than that, this is not a detail that I am prepared to obsess about. How often do we look at our hatch and hood struts anyway?

I've had these on my E53 for almost a year. They are one of my favorite modifications that I have done (and I've done a lot). They work beautifully and are such a nice convenience. My Mom wants them so badly for her X3.

Neat, thanks guys for sharing your experience with these.
Am still a little leery because it might put undue stress on the soft close mechanism (having had to repair it and price out parts for it, they are $$$), but they still look interesting!

Yes. I ordered mine at the end of Jan and they showed up last week.
Having said that, the seller is VERY good at communicating even if his English is not. I'd buy from him again.
