HVAC control repair

'03 E53 4.4
The small cage fan in my HVAC control is not starting. A little push gets it going, but no cleaning has helped. Part number is 64116902560.

Anyone know if that fan can be replaced or repaired in some way?

If not, any suggestions on finding a replacement? The prices for new are in the $650 range, so I'd like to find a working used one, if possible. Ebay shows several, but not my exact model number... Are they different throughout the years? I believe that panel (visually) may have been used in others bmws as well.

Any guidance or help is appreciated.

Thanks. I'll take a look. I read something last night that pulling it out and cleaning the bushings with some contact cleaner. On my agenda today.

This video shows how to disassemble the unit so you can access the circuit board and fan for cleaning. Still looking for the fan replacement.

Thanks for these, David. But no luck. Pulled the unit, cleaned the fan with contact cleaner, but still won't start.

I did some searches for a replacement fan and it looks like bmw used to make one - BMW # 67 32 8 362 767. Looks like it's out of production.

The fan is made by Papst, the part # is 934 1704 050. Looks like it's out of production as well.

Anyone have any other suggestions/ideas... Or am I stuck buying an entire climate control unit?

Sorry. That's bad luck.

We design boards occasionally at my work. I will try the obsolete part sources on Monday to see if any are floating around.

I guess I would look for a used one - either use it intact or transfer the fan over. Car-part.com (with a dash) searches tons of auto recyclers. They would call it heater control panel. I just checked and saw one for $75 that was missing some buttons ( no problem for you) or others at $100 in "A" condition. eBay too of course, but it seems to be full of used parts listed for more than new...

Good thought... I was searching for a replacement using my part number (which includes rear air)... And that one seems to be a rare beast. But if I only need the fan, I could get any one of them and just remove the fan and solder it to my board.

I thought the IHKA sampling fan worked electromagnetically...are you sure there isn't a crack in the solder on your board? Or check all the piins in the wiring connectors to make sure none are bent or broken.

The e39 & e53 use the same IHKA control panel...there's probably multiple part nbrs. So the thing to look for if replacing the board and sampling fan is to get one configured the same as yours. The older IHKAs have the REST button...the newer IHKAs have the MAX button...make sure when shopping for new or used that you get the one configured like yours came from the factory.

Thanks qsilver. It is electromagnetic. No broken pins or solders that I can see. I too thought that was the issue, especially since my issues started when an indy repair place had the dash apart to replace the evaporator. I've checked everything twice and even under a microscope. Everything looks good. My one concern is a pinched wire back in the dash. But it does run as long as I give it a push. Does anyone know it'll it works by applying more voltage initially to start and if so does it do that from a a specific wire?

Not sure if this is helpful or just telling you something you already know...but the sampling fan becomes active when the car AWAKES.

The IHKR sampling fan isn't directly on the P-bus which is what activates the SLEEP & AWAKE modes...but those modules that do cause the SLEEP/AWAKE modes are controlled by the GM III...and according to the info below...the GM III is respnsible for putting the K-bus back online when a call is made...and the IHKA control module is on the K-bus:

(see end of 2nd paragraphfor K-bus info)

(you can see where and what bus specific control modules are on and how data moves through the communcation bus)

(low cluster/K,CAN, Diagnostic bus topological chart)

(high cluster & I,K,M,P,CAN, Diagnostic bus topolgy chart)
