Another Misfire/Rough start winter thread
I have been reading the forums for a while, been subbed since I bought my X5 8 years ago but been lurking mostly. I was able to be pretty lucky with my X5 overall but its been really down hill last fall which is pretty much the last time I fully drove it. The first day that the temp dropped by a bit the car had rough starts and would basically stall. I have been using another car in the meantime so it wasn't an issue. I had the car checked at regular indy spot last year, they said they put a camera in the engine block and noticed a warped cylinder. They gave me two options, replace the engine ($4.5k or even out the warped cylinder using some special tool they would have some other shop use for $3.7k). This summer I took it to another indy spot and they quoted me $4.6k for the intermediate levers/shafts to start. I have attached their verbage and test results they ran with the software. Now just like most of us, I still love the X5 but I am not sure if its worth it anymore at this point. I have 130k miles on her, I was hoping to get a few more years out of this one. This is a 2005 4.4 N62. I am not really mechanically savy to do the work myself so saving up on labor much is not really an option. It seems the indy shop prognosis is correct by reading other forum posts here and other boards but its not a final and could add on to the overall cost. I would want to keep the x5 if possible but not sure what to do at this point. If anyone can chime in with any wise words/input and/or experience I would appreciate it. Thank you all. -Luke |

Most people live with this by starting and shutting down the engine and restarting the engine. The rough start should go away on the restart.
The second mechanic is probably correct in his assessment of the problem. The first mechanic is blowing smoke up your ass. Never heard of a warp cylinder in all my life of wrenching on cars. A warp head from overheating, but no camera will show that until you remove the head and place it on a level metal table.

I have the same cold start issues. A restart is all that is needed to stop the misfires. Doing the levers isn't guaranteed to fix it either. There is a setting for the levers that allows you to adjust them from 0.8mm to 0.3mm. I will play with this setting as the weather gets colder. If I recall at the tail of last year, it didn't make a difference and mine was set wrong initially.

You are right, it was a warped head from overheating that the shop showed. This was done last year so I apologize for poor wording on my part. I did finally find the paperwork from the diagnosis and I am attaching it now. I did drive it home from the shop ~7miles, but that was the last time I drove it. LVP, I did drive it for a while the first few times it did that, but then one morning it wasn't even that cold and it barely ran even after multiple restarts. I really appreciate all your inputs. Still trying to see if i have any options left, are engine swaps recommended? Maybe if i find one with 90k miles or so... Thank you very much. |
