Any preference on the ELM327 device? Are the inexpensive small ones as good as the larger ones?

I'm really not familiar with this kind of thing!

If I suggested a module and an ap for your phone, you get the module on eBay and the ap from the Ap Store, not from the dealership.

ELM 327 is the module, you can get these with a WiFi or bluetooth interface to your phone/tablet, and the Torque/Torque Lite ap for the phone comes from Google Play store.

My preference is with the bluetooth version. I bought the wifi version and I have to jump through hoops getting the collected data out to my PC. If I had realized what the wifi version was, I would have gone bluetooth. Having said that, maybe the bluetooth has overhead that I am not aware of.

I have to select an option to mail a data set to my PC, but I have to change the network I am on because the module -- wifi -- has no ability to transmit beyond the module and my phone. If I want to sent data, then I must select that option, then change my wifi connection in mid-stream so that the data goes to my router, and eventually to my PC. Perhaps I would have more joy if I used a tablet to collect the data, but I have not tested that yet.

If you had a bluetooth module that talked to your phone, then your phone would still have wifi capability to email the result to your PC. That's my theory.

I picked up one of the below last year and use the paid Torque app on an S4 via Bluetooth. Works great!

You can clear CEL and monitor multiple parameters in real time. Transmission temp, intake temp, throttle position, RPM, etc etc. It was well worth it.

Not good reviews on this one, but maybe it is just BMW friendly!

Does the E53 have OBD2 vacuum read outs?

I need to see what my vacuum is at idle to diagnose something and so far still waiting for my INPA cable, my PA Soft can't read live data for some reason and I have an ELM OBD2 bluetooth adapter and trying to see which app supports it.
