Thanks for the offer! :-)
StephenVA,
Thanks, that is very generous. Work seriously got in the way and then some stuff on my building project needed attention. I finally got around to setting up a PC for the software. Read the code and it was the gas cap. Cleared it and no more SES light! (I know, that CRT is not the cutest but it'll do for working on the cars....) The engine does not like to run without the temp sensor attached it seems. It behaved very odd until I provisionally re-attached it. At least now I feel I can keep going with it as I know there is no code from the motor.

On a completely unrelated topic... how do you like your e70 diesel? The wife is enjoying her e53 mtech X3 and I really enjoy driving the 4.4i X5 but more gas efficiency would be nice. What type of numbers are returning on your 35d? I'm assuming that's the same engine that was in the 335d?

The e70 is the school bus, many runs every day, it has 7 seats. The active suspension is way more comfortable than the e53 sport suspension. I dumped the run-flats which made an improvement on the ride. It is also noticeably heavier but the diesel can really shove it along when under boost. I never really checked mileage on it, for sure it beats the V8 in efficiency. Lots of threads on the e70 forum on that.
However, it is nothing like the e53. I have yet to drive the new style X3 but I suspect that it is the real successor to the e53. The e70 is BMW's answer to the MB M-class and Audi's Q7. The e70 diesel is far more agile than either of those (in diesel form) and that is why we picked it after driving all three. I think the 35d motor is very similar to the one in the 3-series. Unfortunately I have not seen any plans by BMW to sell the X3 3L diesel in the USA even if they are selling very well in all other markets.

I agree it is unfortunate that the 3.0d is not making it into the X3 is a disappointment. After reading some reviews and checking out the specs... I'm not sure 155hp and 280lb-ft is enough to move the X3 in a "spirited" enough manner for my wife. She might be stuck in the e83 for longer than she realizes... lol. Should be okay though, she really enjoys it and I don't mind because the m54 is a lot easier to maintain than my n62.

A bit sinister looking
Had to set four bath tubs yesterday (plumber is waiting to do the hookups) and work on a tray ceiling but got the headlights off and the air filter removed. Soon time to remove the ABS module and send it out for fixing but it is a bit of an oily mess in there.
Straightened the under-ride bar by gently rolling the Tundra front tire onto it. The passenger side attachment "ear" was a bit crooked after that but with the help of a vice I could straighten it a bit more and it is pretty straight again. (This part is attached to the front of the frame rails RealOEM.com * BMW E53 X5 3.0i Underride protection) Back to the work on the house today but hope to remove the engine cover and the ventilation housing later this afternoon. I'm trying to remove as much as I can of the trim and aux systems without disabling the vehicle. I am wondering where to disconnect the AC. Looks like at the radiator is a must but can't quite see if I need to disconnect the compressor or if I could move it out of the way? I am planning to undo the front sub-frame from the chassis as well as the rear transmission suppor. Then undo the shocks at the hub carrier and roll the whole engine/AT assy out the front. Hard to believe it has been over 30,000 miles since I had the transmission out.

I think that the book says to disconnect the compressor from the block and leave it in the engine compartment so you don't have to vent the system. But, if you're still planning to take the whole front off, you will have to reclaim & vent it to remove the condenser.
