Just looked and it seems this is the proper fluid. I think I’ll get a 14mm allen wrench to cut and do it right.

So the consensus is to change diffs fluid at around 100k miles? My X is at 105k miles and i don't think the diffs were ever flushed. I have changed the TC fluid though.

Ideally, you would change the diff fluid at around 10-15k miles to flush out the wear/break-in metals and then every 40-50k after that.

At 105k miles, the differentials could definitely benefit from fresh fluid!

100k seems reasonable to me. BMW has “redefined” lifetime for many cars/components to 100k.

Thanks to OP for very helful post.

My X5d threw a code "Tc fluid too old"

at 147,000 it had never been done before. Came out looking like water.

siphoned it out (to avoid removing the cumbersome drain bolt) and poured some in, used about 90% of a bottle.

For the 2011 X5 E70 35i, Newtis.info states it should be filled with 1.2 liters:

https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/e...-guide/5vPLgno

Am I missing something here or none of you used more than 90-95% of 1 liter?

I replaced the rear diff oil this Sunday and I only vacuum drained about 0.85L-0.9L. from it. I put back about 0.95L and by the time I pushed the last milliliters nothing came out the filling plug.

As you can see, it looked like it has never been replaced before and it looked really bad. 84.000 miles on the car.

Up next, maybe the next weekend, are front diff (0.7L) and TC (0.7L).

If your real diff looks that bad, the front is going to be atrocious. My rear diff fluid still looked like dark honey color. Front was nearing black. Hear cycles with proximity to engine might have something to do with it but? This was at 166k miles btw.

I also put back under the fill spec. Not by much, but 5 - 10% sounds about right.

I seem to remember that my ista has a special bulletin saying to only but .6L in the front diff. Am I crazy? I'm going to try to do the diff fluids today, and I need to do an oil change at some point too Want to get the diffs out of the way first, so we'll see how I'm feeling.

Diff case wrench

I bought one of these but not from Amazon. I think it was about $15 I believe I bought it from one of the euro-car websites but can't remember and can't find it on FCP or ECS website right now, It was worth every penny! Not having to try to cut a hardened steel allen wrench, plus it has 17mm box end for engine drain plug as well. I use a topsider oil extractor and bent a piece of 3/8' inch copper tubing into a U shape attached to suction tubing to remove all the old oil then used the copper tubing to fill. Front diff was much darker than rear,TC looked almost new and rear diff was honey colored.
2011 x5d with about 60,000 miles.
