First thing I would do is check the battery and charging Voltage.

Not sure if all E70 suffer from the same problem the 4.8l gasoline version suffer from. At least the 4.8l gasoline E70 WILL NOT under any circumstances alert the driver of a no charge situation. It WILL alert the driver of a low battery if you happen to be sitting with the ignition on and operating the radio or other accessories, but with the engine running, no warning of a low Voltage or lack of charging problem.

If the charging Voltage gets too low, portions of the vehicle shut down to conserve power. First the All Wheel Drive system, then the DSC, ABS, Stability Control, Active Suspension and then I think Airbags. I may have the order a bit wrong, only had this happen once, but the All Wheel Drive was the first to shut down then shortly followed by the DSC/ABS.

The other thing that is required when changing the transfer case fluid, not sure about the transmission fluid, is the Adaptations need to be cleared for the slip or power transfer.

So please advise if your X5 has an automatic or manual transmission and if you changed the transmission and/or transfer case fluid.
