Crabbing as terminal understeer? Describe it more.

Turning at slow speed (parking or three point turn) with the steering wheel close to or at full lock ( either left or right), the front tire on the turning side "crabs" or shutters. I never had this with my 2006 X5 with 17" wheel. I am wondering if the wider 19" wheels on my 2012 X5 aggravate the situation of AWD and differences in rotation speed left to right in turning in a tight radius.

Ahh, the shuddering makes sense.
My F-Vee did just that, skidded the front tires in stick-slip at full lock slow speed. I suspect that the Kamm Force radius is being exceeded. I don't know that it is a problem.

I had exact same problem. I replaced my transfer case under warranty. The problem has gone since then.
Hmm.... it looks like more common problem. I replaced my transfer case based on the post I saw.. other owner's post about that problem and his fix regarding another owner's question. so there are many out there. I'm sure that many owners would just drive without noticing or ignoring it since it feels normal in other situation.. |

I have a dying transfer case that makes bad sounds when getting out of the parking lot, also when wheels are turned all the way to left or right, the whole car would tremble when accelerating. I have changed the transfer case oil, the trembling has gone, only the sound remains. However, when reversing out of a parking space with wheels fully turned the car stops advancing on it's own and i have to accelerate to make it move, like it's encountering some kind of resistance. I suppose this is also from the transfer case....? Anyway since the trembling is gone after the oil change, i'm thinking to keep it for a while since it's not doing anything else during normal driving...

Agree with the transfer case problem. Mine had stuttering during low speed turns and a noticeable clunk when coming to a stop. Had it replaced under warranty (after 2 trips to dealer and finally having an indy diagnose).

Just back from the dealer. Yes, known transfer case issue. They first change the fluid in the transfer case, service tech said its higher viscosity. If that doesn't fix the problem them its replace transfer case. I'll have to see over the next couple weeks if this fixes the issue.

I think what Doug finds amusing is that different fluid can only MASK the issue, not FIX the issue.
