Coolant Pressure Test Adapter P/N - 4.8i

I have a serious leak on my 2007 X5 4.8i, but I am having a hard time tracking down the source. searched online for adapter part number that works with my tank, but cannot find anything definite.

Has anyone found an adapter that works? If so what was the part number?

I know the harbor freight one works for my e53. Check if the expansion tank caps have the same part numbers on realoem.com. If they are, then the HF kit will work.

In a pinch I have drilled a hole in an old cap and used a tire valve like this http://www.amazon.com/VTR-TR-416-Out...rds=tire+valve

So I have a big Astro Pneumatic cooling system pressure tester kit.

http://www.amazon.com/Astro-78585-Un...ressure+tester

The #6 cap works on my E70. This happens to be Astro 78210-06 but it also fits older model GM with the screw on expansion tank cap. It happens to also fit my 1996 Chevy Impala SS. Same as full size Caprice, Buick Roadmaster, Cadillac Fleetwood.

You might even be able to get a GM cap from the local parts store to cobble up something??

The E70 cap has a few O-rings on an extension that go inside the tank, but the extension and the O-rings are not necessary for the cooling system to be pressurized.

The GM cap fit on my BMW no problem, but for under $6 if you can find it and check it out, it might work out. You may need to cut the outer 1/8" of the "hat brim" on the cap if it does not fully seal, but I think it will work for drilling and building a pressure test cap.

Stant or Carquest 10239, it is used on a lot of GM's and is a very popular cap.

See the ebay listing for vehicle applications - Stant 10239 Radiator Cap | eBay

thanks for the help.

I picked up the cap and modified it to hold pressure. The threads don't feel like they are the same but it gets the job done.

Yea the threads may feel a bit loose, but for the task it will get the job done. It may be that the cap does not have the center section with the O-rings as well. I could not find a closer cap in the selection of what I had in my kit and I was able to pressurize the system.

Did you find the leak?

This is the cap before I tightened everything up. Ended up applying epoxy to seal the insert to the cap. Now it works well.

I haven't been able to check it over yet because the wife made me quit to hand Christmas lights and work on the tree.
