Any MY13 or older BMW Assist subscribers tried having your hard drive upgraded?
I was informed by the after hours customer service agent that packages for BMW assist can no longer be renewed for cars 2013 or older. I tried to contain my frustration with the agent, but as I'm sure anyone else who has found out about this would agree, it's a little insulting to be told that a car that is five model years old is "obsolete" and "ineligible for upgrades". I did find a thread in this forum about this issue. So it's clear that BMW has decided to pull the plug on offering this service on "older vehicles": http://www.xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-foru...activated.html Today I finally had a chance to follow up on this, so I tried calling the BMW Concierge from my iDrive. It also indicated that the service is not enabled, but I did manage to reach a concierge. According to the person I spoke to today, it's true that this service if fact cannot be renewed on any car older than 2013. HOWEVER... it MAY be possible to have the hard drive (her words, not hardware) upgraded in my car, which would then make it eligible to be re-enrolled in the service. I have a call in to my Service Advisor to check on this now. So, all that said, my question is has anyone had this upgrade done? If so, were you able to re-subscribe to BMW Assist? And, did you have to pay for it and if so, how much did it cost? Any insights are much appreciated here. I don't know if it's the general consensus, but considering how much BMW is pushing ConnectedDrive, it seems a little shocking to me that they are discontinuing online services after just three model years!

I also confirmed through the BMW Assist Operator that for my vehicle, a 2011 X5, I will not be able to renew the subscription to any BMW Assist services. I did renew last year, for a one year period that expires in May.
It is my understanding the primary reason for the obselescence is the 3G telephone technology built into the 2013 and older vhicles. I believe BMW is having trouble finding a reliable national cell phone carrier (like an AT&T or Verizon) to partner with (contract) that part of this complex service. The cell phone companies ONLY want to support the newest technology. Could replacing the commbox with an updated cell phone (4G) technology solve the problem? I believe it is simply too complex of a transition for BMW to offer an equipment upgrade, reliably and profitable. Plus, these phones are very integrated into the iDrive software; it would just create other new problems for BMW to manage more vehicle, comm technolgy, and software versions. So, we are simply abandoned. Time to make sure you have a good working smartphone. |
