Intermittent Error Codes 47C4 and 478E?

Hey guys-

Over the past two weeks I've been getting intermittent CEL's that seem to stay on for about 5 start ups and eventually go away for the next few startups until they eventually come back. Originally I thought it had something to do with the DEF level and/or the DAF. Was due for an oil change and they emptied and filled the DEF fluid, but still the light came back on eventually. Triggered a DAF Regen, cleared the codes then came back almost immediately.

Not sure exactly what is the issue with the below codes, the car runs good and have been giving it an "Italian Tune-up" with no luck. Did some searching and couldn't find these specific codes out on the web.

It's a 2012 X5 35d with 60k and the JBD chip set for 60% which I hace not adjusted in the past 10k and has been working great.

Any advice? Stupid Diesel emission garbage! Thanks!!!

Yeah, I am sure it is the stupid emissions garbage and not the JBT crap- I mean how could it be?

Well, it does the job, but the only way to figure out if it is causing problems is to disconnect it.
BMWs are well respected here, but they have their flaws, you know....

Same issue

I have exactly the same issue on my 2010 X5 35D. I can clear the codes and they will sometimes come back the same day. Sometime the CEL just goes off randomly for a couple of days and comes back.

The only codes I have are 47C4 and 478E and mine is totally stock with no tuners.

Has anyone figured this out yet?

Thanks, I have seen those two posts. The codes I have are related to the low pressure EGR but it is hard to get to the sensor and clean it.

Hi all,

This is worth .25, right? I have the exact same issue as woodfin, same 3 codes. Car is running great, but occasionally get the "engine malfunction" warning for about 5 seconds before it goes away, no CEL however. I pull 47C4, 478f, and 478e with my scanner.

While driving with my scanner I've noticed the reading/graph for the low pressure egr is stationary (flat-lined) at 5% 95% of the time. (only getting a static reading 5% of the time regardless of hot, cold, speed, rpm, ambient temp etc.) (FYI: the reading for the HPEGR is always static when the car is running and responds to inputs ie. accelerating, rmp, etc) Do we think it's the actual mechanical egr, or the corresponding "vacuum control unit"? If it's the control unit do you have any idea if it's complicated to get to it?

Any resolutions? Just a buggered up LP EGR?

Thanks in advance

Well it seems that these two error codes are rare because of the lack of responses. My codes have been more frequent lately. My wife drove to Memphis the other day and there were no codes for 2 days. Now they are back.

I still haven't seen that anyone has taken the low pressure EGR out to clean. It appears as if it would be difficult due to it's location.

Thanks for the response. I think the problem is a computer/sensor/electrical problem-- not a mechanical issue like a vacuum leak or CBU in the EGR. I think it's p/n 11747805391. However, I'm not sure where it's located on the car-- I think it's under the intake manifold, though. Perhaps accessible for the weekend warrior?

If you read my prior post you'll see why I think its a faulty part-- using my scanner in real time I was able to see that the reading (any reading) for the low pressure egr was intermittent-- now (500 miles later) it's non existent. The value/reading never changes... In other words the ECU is not receiving input from that sensor... or whatever sensor sends the LP EGR values to the ECU.

PS: 11/2010 Build-- I think that's relevant because there was a mid year change regarding LP EGR system.
