iDrive says Oil Level too high but dipstick says OK
Sorry if this has been answered before but I spent a few hours reading the forums to no avail. 2013 X5 3.5D, I changed oil and put in little over 7 ltrs of oil and dipstick says oil level is in middle between min and max however iDrive says oil over the Max limit. Whats going on ? Is there a reset procedure for the iDrive or ?? Thanks in advance ! |

I've changed my oil half a dozen times and I've never put more than seven liters in for a fill. I've never seen a 'MAX' indicated in the iDrive display. Usually it's a segment below but full on the dipstick and stays there until I change the oil again. How long did you drive after changing the oil before you checked the level? I'd drive about 20 miles after reaching NORMAL OPERATING TEMPERATURE before I trusted either for comparison purposes. I don't know the proper method of obtaining a dipstick reading for the X5d but I use the method prescribed for the E39 M5.

Likely a failing oil level sensor.
My 2010 did the same, replaced under warranty. |

It went back to Normal after 2 days
but I am glad I did not trust the iDrive and relied on the old school dip-stick.
Thanks for your replies |

I chased this one for about a month and a half under warranty with the dealer...ended up being the oil level sensor...the first new sensor installed was a bad sensor, so this started the dealerships conversation with the BMW engineer to troubleshoot other potential causes, the second new sensor worked though...
