Oil thermostat gasket diy

Hello guys, new to the X5 scene here. Just bought an auction e70 X5 4.8. Went to changed the oil and once I started the car, the oil leaked out very fast out of the Left side of oil pan just above the transfer case (I think, see image).

A little about me, true bmw enthusiast and intermediate diyer(z3; 540; 325ci; e90 m3)

Has anyone performed this diagnosis and diy to solve the leak with detailed pictures? I heard that the oil thermostat gasket is 99% my problem.

Thank you for any input!

Ps can I get away without jacking the engine? Car is in the driveway.
Ps2: I can't seem to upload photos on here

To quickly answer your questions though,

Here is the direct link to the DIY. Be sure to read the WHOLE thread before performing the job. There is very useful information on the later pages of the thread.

No, you should not have to unbolt and jack up your engine. Some people have but there are other methods to complete this job. You just need specific tools. It CAN vary a bit depending on your vehicle options. Read the above thread for more information on this.

"N62" is your engine model.

Let us know if you have any other questions, need help, and be sure to give us updates on how you completed the job. Good luck!

The official ISTA-D repair procedure includes removing the driver's side wheel well lining to access the last three bolts that attach the oil cooler thermostat onto the block. I tried to do this from the engine bay and couldn't access the last two bolts. It's even more difficult if you have the adaptive drive option.
