I'd like to try to do the job without damaging the bags. I believe only one of them is leaking. I plan to replace both, but I'd like to keep the better one as a backup. Not sure if thats even practical.

Some notes from my own thermostat/water pump adventure:
Based on the description in post 180 in this thread: https://xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-forums/...-diy-pics.html I removed this hose connection after triple checking that it actually would contain engine coolant. This drain things fairly nicely and was relatively easy to catch the drain off: I thought it prudent to protect the back of the radiator core with some cardboard, since I'd be working in the vicinity all day. I discovered that the rubber portion of my charge pipe is saturated with oil, and the reinforcement rings have migrated. I've put them back where they belong, but obviously this piece needs to go on my short list. It seems that the excess oil in the intake is causing the rubber to break down. This car seems to have the ORIGINAL Egr cooler from 2009. I let the engine idle and bled the coolant out until I stopped seeing air coming back. The engine got up to about 55°C while idling. And success!!! PS: I did not get to replacing the glow module today. I got a late start and decided I just wouldn't have time. I also discovered a notable amount of soot around the low pressure EGR housing. And some at the turbo wastegate shaft nearby. I need to figure out where that's leaking. PPS: if you buy the OEM thermostat, it comes with the gasket preinstalled. You don't have to buy one in addition like I did. I also, somehow ordered only one O-ring for the various connectors that have to come apart, and in my infinite stupidity, ordered the only one hat comes with the thermostat.

Out with the old: In with the new: The construction of the Arnott bags is a bit different. They are single convolute instead of double. They likely don't have as much travel, but I don't see that the travel of the OEM bags is ever really utilized. I swapped the rubber shields to the new springs. I haven't found any leaks yet, but I still feel like I should have trimmed the damaged end off the tubing before installing the new bags. I still need to replace the glow module.

Make sure you also inspect the distribution box for those damn bags. I replaced both mine and found that I didnt need to. I just needed to replace the gaskets in the distribution box. Its on the drivers side just before the rear tire.

The rear is staying pumped up over night. If my wife ever stays home for more than a day, I'll be able to determine if they are still leaking. Is suspect there's still a tiny leak, but it's 1000x better than it was.

First off, mileage check:
Yesterday I tackled our first oil change with the X5. That went fairly smoothly (other than the fact that someone used the wrong pan plug and the threads weren't a good fit) so I decided I had better finally replace the bad glow plug module. The vehicle had an error for one of the glow plugs being bad. The previous owner had the plug replaced, but the error came back. This indicates a failure of the output channel on the glow plug module. Some online research would indicate this failure mode is somewhat common, especially when the thermostat is failed open. Changing the glow module gave me a chance to inspect the intake manifold more thoroughly. There's definitely a good amount of CBU, but really not bad for an engine with almost 125k miles. I removed anything that was coming off easily, but I did not go overboard. I also inspected the connectors on the rear injectors for corrosion, since the windshield trays were leaking. Last time I had the cover off (for the thermostat job) the foam on top was soaked. I used a bunch of silicone to seal up the trays, as well as adding a bead of silicone to the rear plastic cover to encourage any water to go off the back. This seems to have helped immensely, as even after some record rains (and the X5 living outside) the foam was dry and there were no fresh signs of evaporated water. I also cut the rear brake pad sensor off and twisted the wires together so I could kill the false warning until I get a new sensor in. Lastly, when attempting to clear my check engine light, I discovered that my INPA cable may not be the right one for this chassis. I was able to talk to some modules, but I keep getting no response from the DDE. I am going to take the connector apart and see if pins 7 & 8 are soldered together. If so, I should be able to remove the jumper and the cable may work after all.

I'm still having an unusual problem where the personal settings, date, trip mileage, etc resets itself. Hopefully once I get INPA talking to the car correctly, I'll be able to discover an error or something to point me in the right direction.

Having said that, 3 of 4 ways out of our little valley include steep mountain climbs with very curvy roads. If not for that, the mileage would be even better. The 29mpg in the photo above was immediately after hitting the reset button, so that doesn't really count. I've yet to actually see mileage like that even on the highway. But the highways around here are all 70+MPH so that hurts the economy a bit. The pumps around here only offer ultra-low sulfur with zero bio.
