Fellow x5 Owner asked If I could help(w compensation) delete his car. Not that I particularly liked the job but I felt like helping out since everyone in the community has been so helpful with everything.

This time it took around 24 hours for the 2 of us over 2 days. , My car I did it over 3 weeks in the cold.

The tune used was DUDMD's and it has since clocked over 1000 miles with no Issues. Dima says they can do x5's in one day at the shop.

Honestly with all the tools in hand it's pretty straightforward I think it's doable. But not for someone doing it the first time.

I imagine a full height lift makes a big difference.

So its about 30 degrees out but I could not wait to remove the Active urea tank.

was a bit nervous to get a CEL as there where still a lot more electrical connections that needed to be unplugged related to the pump that sits on top but I ran the car after and there are no issues.

Im probably about 1 hour in to remove the tank.

it will probably be another 30 min to put the fender back since i keep running back inside to keep warm.

The active urea tank weighs 21lbs about 90% full... made a huge mess removing it as I did not know the urea just falls out of the tube if you do not keep it level. lots of urea all over me and the floor.

once the fender liner is removed there is a really good view of the turbos, saw that one of the turbo feed pipes was missing a bolt. and there is lots of smoke coming from that area.

my feeling is that something must be broken or missing there is no way the waste gate is letting out all that smoke at idle.

missing bolt below.

Edit:
To be clear: the urea tank / urea pump harness with 7 electric connections along with the power switch can also be removed.

whats left in the car is 2 urea lines going to the transfer pump

Stock x5, That bolt is not missing. There is only one in that location. Your leak is from somewhere else, that is on the intake side. I ordered a bolt and hold down last year. Thought it was missing too, but is not the case. The smoke and smell may be from a failing oil line to the turbo. Mine drips right on the exhaust manifold by the LP EGR occasionally. Keep the detailed write ups coming.

Thanks for chiming in! I guess it comes like that from the factory then

I found this picture on another thread, it's from a museum you can see the bolt is missing there too.

My blue smoke smell is coming from the red faded area. My oil coolant lines look good. Just replaced the top one.

the red faded area is covered up in a lot of soot but I am unable to determine the leak location.

A guy over at e90 post found the source of his burning smell to be a burned turbo gasket

unfortunately the e90 setup is slightly different since they do not have the exhaust side egr. so the equvalent part in the x5 might be different.

here is the e90 set up just for comparison.

but a leaky turbo gasket sounds like a plausible reason.

I will get in there with a snake camera, everything is just so cramped in there to figure it out.

Tackled the Passive tank today

One needs to remove the 3 panels directly under and behind the driver seat.

Kind of hard to miss it's the big Styrofoam covered tank

There are 4 13mm bolts holding it in place

There are a lot of lines running trough there and Initially I did unplug some diesel fuel lines as they look a lot like the urea lines. same looking plug and diameter. very easy to discern once it drips on your mouth tho

This is the plug going into the filler tube at the front of the engine for the passive tank. There is a breather tube that travels next to it.

there are 2 connections going to the filler tube and 1 going to the transfer pump on the other side of the car (transfer pump to be removed soon!)

Few electrical connections clip off can be removed before or after the tank is out. or half way while the tank is dangling as I did .

Urea tank dangling after drinking a bit of urea, In retrospect this could have been prevented if I had plugged the fill tube with a cork screw or something. My tank was about half way full it made a gigantic mess.

Since I was allready down there I decided to pull out the filler tube to clean out the engine bay a bit and make replacing the alternator a bit easier whenever the time comes, single 10mm bolt will losen the bracket.

removing the filler tube requires losening the entire fuel filter assembly as it sits on top of the tubes.

remove a few plastic brackets along its path and the entire falopian tube comes out trough the top.

The passive urea tank itself empty weights about 6.6lbs

full of urea ...if the tank carries 4.5 gallons and that equals
17.03435301 liters.

according to quora... 1 litre of water = 1.000kg
17.03435301liters = 17.03435301kg

17.03435301x2.20462lbs = 37lbs

so full you are carrying 37lbs + 6.6 lbs = 43.6lbs

Great documentation. This will come in very handy for me soon.

My turbo waste gate shaft leaks enough to make a lot of black soot marks in that area. Not very much smoke shows though, eapecially since eliminating the DPF and all that back pressure.

I do need to replace the U-shaped oil line and probably others on mine.

So to bring closure to the tune fiasco with the gentleman from this forum who finally disappeared with my 600 bucks, let me just say that there are character issues with this member beyond the issues with the tune that in my opinion could have been worked out without me speaking negatively on the subject. but the guy has been a piece of shit to the end.
tuners info:

here is his response I got when i asked for a refund after putting me trough hell and back

then later told me he never said the issue was with my car.

anyway.

still dealing with smoke issues in the cabin. got pretty bad with the cold out, it is for sure caused by exhaust gas and not oil leaking. as I can see the smoke as soon as I start the car.

Man, that guy thinks awfully highly of himself considering the is a reseller of the tune.

Sure is a shame that Dima @ DUDMD had to go and prove him wrong.

Have you determined the source of your exhaust leak? There’s a rubber line on a banjo fitting on the exhaust manifold for a back pressure sensor. A few have had problems with that leaking into the engine bay and eventually trying to torch stuff under the hood.

yea there was a general lack of interest in making things right. I felt that from the beginning with the generalized answers and slow response rate.

I know the rubber / metal line banjo piece you are talking about that line looks fine, it's something coming from below.

I will make a video to show the amount of smoke coming out and the general direction.
