When I say good, I meant by definition, whatever condition that meets your criteria. The "less issues than others" kind of X5.

I am just all surprised to know literally everyone you see in person that has one said they are horrible. They are not perfect, but I wouldn't say they are horrible. Threads you linked here, is normal on every car forums, each brand has it's own set of issues. We can go on on this thread and debate about stuff but I'm not gonna do that.

I wish you all the best and hope you will find the car that you are looking for

Again, I'm not a BMW noob. I have owned 3 (now 4) in various engines and chassis. From ho-hum M52s to the S54. The most unreliable engine was my 540i, and it had the least milage. I'm not saying they are all this way, but I was put off by many things:

-4.8's do have the coolant pipe problem
- Thread like this: X5 35i vs 50i Regrets?
-Stories like this: https://www.autoevolution.com/news/b...ems-88225.html
More thread here: https://xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-forums/...liability.html

But yea, it really isn't that bad, right? I mean, your own forum has a thread talking about all the issues...

"I dunno, I wouldn't touch a N63 without a warranty. Based on the common fuel injector failures, HPFP failures, same damn oil leaks as the N62, crap valve stems, Timing chain failures, MAF failures. Maybe that is why I see 2011's with 100K miles going for 16k?"

Everything will have issues, I know, but I would rather deal with something with "less issues than others" if you know what I mean.

I understand what you are saying, but I'll go further. The guy I just bought mine from, literally will not stock a V8 X5. He said he doesn't want to sell someone a problematic vehicle and be on the hook to fix it all the time.

He has been in the business for over 20 years, and refuses to buy them. He owns one, but will not sell you one. That speaks volumes to me.

As I said before, I am not a car, or BMW noob. I have been around the block at least twice. It is what it is honestly.

I love it already, but it still needs a few things. I am working on the idea of adding thermal night vision to it, as it was not an option. I previously was the first to install a thermal system into an E46 M3, running the video into my AVIC D3. The camera is still there, but it is huge, and I want to go a step further, FLiR with pedestrian and animal warning. So I have to unravel the world of getting the video to display without losing my audio. I have a few emails out and about with questions to manufacturers.

I am also sourcing Lamin-X headlight and Foglight covers, clear for the headlights, potentially yellow for the fogs, as well as updating the HID system to OSRAM Xenarc 66140 CBI bulbs and either PIAA night breaker H11 behind the yellow Lamin-X or clear covers and PIAA Ion Yellow bulbs.

I am an auto lighting guy. My M3 had Lightwerkz TFX projectors and a 55 watt kit, 5000k bulb temp, retrofitted LED tails, and a rewired setup to use the outer bi-xenons with the headlight stalk, and the foglight button to power the inner reflectors. The rear foglight switch turned the Thermal Camera on and off, allowing a visual indicator that it was on.

I dod some audio retrofits and well, using some really awesome Sony speakers (special editions with ribbon tweeters) and a sub/amp combo. I expect to update the audio as well, but that is in the future.

Also, anyone have experience with Bosch Envision wiper blades? I wanna try them out as well. My M3 had Icons, and while I love them, the Envision blades are made to be silent, and clear all forms of debris. Just a thought.

I might also try and source the same LEDs used in the interior from the lights package, and add some more ambient light to the interior. Thinking floors, and possibly door pulls if it isn't too bright. We will see.

Pics from the dealer below.

We don't know anything about the dealer you bought it from or the car you purchased. Did you buy it from a BMW dealer? If not, is this dealer buying cars from auction? What was the price and mileage on yours? Did you do a pre-inspection on it? What are the service records? There is no guarantee on either the I6 or V8 or any model. Much what goes into buying a used car is how well it was maintained previously. I had the previous X5 3.0 (e53) for 9 years and 100K miles. My '08 4.8 currently has 94K miles on it. I don't see much of a difference in costs on it.

Dealer has been running and indie shop selling and servicing BMWs for over 20 years. Yes, he is indie, but he has certified mechanics from BMW (ex head was a M Specialist) and has a reputation for being the best around, at least in this area.

As I said before, everything is subjective to the person buying the car. I hover seen far more posts about the V8s and Diesels than the I6's. Nothing wrong with that, but this is a different kind of segment in the BMW world. I'm learning not many people here are huge DIYers and even though some exists, it is very different from the ///M world. Maybe it is just the difference in the people that buy X5s, who knows?

Whatever the case may be, I bought a 35i, so the V8 discussion is over. Can't really go back and change my purchase, so moving on...

Enjoy your new ride!

As a V8 owner, I can say it's not been crazy maintenance wise, but everything is multiplied. For example, when your valve cover gasket leaks, (which it will,) it's double the job. More plugs to change; more coil paks, etc. More oil to dump in at every service interval. I have not even had to deal with some of the unique-to-the-V8 maintenance issues like coolant transfer pipe, valley pan, etc. So yes, it is a good bit more expensive to maintain than a 6, and anyone who denies that is nuts. I do think the 35i is more than adequate for the X5 as long as you don't want to tow anything too heavy, especially for any distance. And the 6 is a fantastic motor. You'll be rewarded by slightly better fuel mileage.

My only reason for suggesting you consider a V8 was the greater ease in finding the "loaded" car that would have all the options you said you wanted.

Agreed. We had a helluva time finding a diesel with 99% of the options we wanted... but V8's that had them were everywhere. I still wish you could get the M aero kit on the e70 diesel but it wasn't available. Oh well, we'll get that when we upgrade to an F chassis X5 in 4 or 5 years.

Congrats on your purchase. Always liked grey BMW's, in all their shades. Looks like a peach too. BMW's are an addiction... and not an inexpensive one either. My wife and I are on something like #15ish. At least as a DIY'er costs aren't too bad to own. Which reminds me... I need to do glow plugs and module on her diesel next week.

We had originally wanted to get the Diesel because of fuel economy. Coming from an M3, anyone would understand this. We got 19mpg average int he M. less than 300 to a tank. It is bad. Could be an unknown issue, but it is what it is.

All that being said, I think you can upgrade or update things you want, it just costs money. Like the side cameras. You need the cameras, the cables and the button and some coding. I'm sure I'm oversimplifying it, but you get what I mean. Comfort seats might just make their way into the car, if I can code them correctly. We shall see.

Everything else is awesome. What an upgrade from an E46.

Well, you can add the flares and upgrade to 20" wheels; I did this to mine.

We did. Added flares and 20" X6 style 597's. Looks 100% better now, but still, an M aero package would be nice.
