Looking at the back of the 5-litre Jar of Castrol Edge Full Synthetic 5W-40, I noticed that it says "Recommended by world leading car manufacturers. Meets the Engine Test Requirements of ...BMW Longlife-01". The latter is my OEM oil. I guess this is different than ideally explicit wording "Recommended by BMW..." so not 100% legit exchange?

Just bought 2 other 1-litre cans of Castrol Edge Full Synthetic 5W-40 at CAD 13.95(which I have in my engine and have added 2 litres by now since I bought the vehicle).

Update - just drove from Toronto to Clearwater Florida and back - 3k miles/5k kms both ways and the oil consumptuin as per the electronic indicator is zero! I drove at 70mph average which occurs at surprisingly high 2,500rpm with occasional faster runs.

Since the last time the car burned through a1 litre over 2.7k kms of day-to-day druving, this tells me that in my case, my S63 engine takes some oil when pushed and doesnt seem to consume any when driven softly and without stop and go.

PS While in US I filled up at Chevron where possible (South ) and bought tons a box and a bit of Techron, 2 bottles of Liqui Moly, box of 12 of Red Line, one big bottle of Lucas, Sea Foam..all except Techron just in case... its embarrassing ) thats what happens when you cant buy these in Canada.

I run through 4 20-ounce bottles of Techron on my way back. I would have put a couple more but didnt want to exceed the recommended 5 bottles per oil change. As of yet no comment on any perceptable impact - my goal was to clean some build up I may have (on my now 67k miles engine) off as recommended in this thread above!

PS 2) One another note - my tire noise drove me nuts and I destroyed the outter edges of both front 275/40/20 RF Bridgestone Duellers with correct 38PSI in one trip just by highway cruising!!! I found a similar thread from 2012 and posted it there.

I would add Lucas Stop Leak to that list. My oil consumption has been virtually 0 for the last 5k miles. I combine it with Castrol Edge 0w-40. 7-7.5 qts oil to 1 qt of Lucas stuff.

Yup, I think your engine is just fine.

Update
Just had my oil changed for Liqui Moli 5w-40(alignment attempt is documented in another thread on Run flat tires)) I am looking forward to find out how Liqui Moli holds up in my day-to-day driving vs. Castrol that I used to have and post-Techron that I poured on my way from Florida.. 4 20-oz bottles.

By the way I was told in that garage that to prevent burn build up I should only use Shell oil as it is the only one in Canada without ethanol..I have no idea.

After approximately 6k kms the indicator was half full as it just went down today for the first time from 3/4 to half. 5k was done strictly on the highway on my Toronto-Florida trip.

Yes its better on the highway. I now attribute the oil consumption for my particular vehicle to the driving node/style and may be the weather (freezing temperatures in the winter vs. Above freezing).

I will be running the cleaners like Techron and Redline and Liqui Moli that I stocked up upon during my drive to Florida. I also bought Sea Foam as I read a bunch of good reviews but not sure as I also read about dried seals...so not sure

Update. 2 litres over 10k km oil change interval.
As soon as cold temperatures came with Winter my oil consumption seems to increase. Overall needed only 2 litres over 10k kilometers change interval this time. Used Liqi Moly. Both were added after 5k of these 10k. Flooring it makes a big differences, freezing temperatures as well.
This time using Fuchs. Both times 5-40.
Using only Shell gas.

Here's my observation when I switched oils. I've been using castrol 5W-30 for a few oil changes with the X5M and found that I needed to add a quart every 800-1k miles. I tried Mobil 1 0w-40 and my oil consumption dropped to 1 quart every 2,500 miles. I'm now using Liqui-moly 5w-40 and reached 2k miles (3,218 kil) and the oil level shows 3/4 full.

The car is driving hard daily...basically do an "Italian Tune-Up" everyday.

Yeah my Indy switched me to that as well. No oil burn (replacing the Crank Case Valve has helped as well).
