Those who've actually done it report that it rides the same if not better. If you are really frustrated with not being able to properly diagnose a leak/sagging air suspension issue it's a good alternative. Remember that the X5 was offered w/o SLS so I don't see anything wrong.

For me, I was about to pull the trigger until I finally fixed my issue and haven't looked back. But if it were to give me headaches agains I will swap to coils in a heartbeat.

Yep figured it's not worth more of my time to track down the leak or purchase more bags. Seems even with purchasing new bags there is a chance those will leak out of the box as well lol!

The only thing stopping me from going coil conversion is that I was not able to find a solution to the air suspension service light that will come on once the conversion happens and there is also the potential for the AWD to be deactivated if the light comes on.
I was not able to locate a bypass module for the E70. They make them for the E53 but no E70 which is kinda odd.

Wanted to provide an update for those who may refer to this thread in the future.

I had a different garage look into the issue with the airbag still dropping and they discovered that the airline hadn't been fully pushed into the airbag. Apparently a simple click and it was connected correctly. They've had the car for the last 24 hours and the suspension hasn't dropped so hopefully this is closed now.

As per the first garage they recommended swapping out the control arms and also the control arm bushes as one had split and dumped it's fluid.

I'm hoping that after spending a small fortune that this resolves my issues for the moment.

I hope this helps others.

No bypass to the air to coil conversion for the E70 yet?

So I'm still somewhat confused as to how the self levelling suspension works.

My air bags are no longer leaking but when I get in the car it occasionally pumps air into the left hand side for example:

When I park the car on my drive (just me, no kids) and measure the left side it's 728mm... when I come out in the morning and re-measure it's still 728mm but when I turn the car on it pumps air into the airbag to around 734mm. I've read and re-read how the SLS is supposed to work and it's more to do with weight being put into or out of the car. So why does the car feel the need to put air into the bag?

Any advice would be appreciated.... Mark

Mine does the same. Its honestly any number of factors.

I am a creature of habit. Every day, I park the X5 in the same spot in the garage and every day I take the same route to the office 62 miles each way.

Sometimes when I get in initially the system comes on and does its thing, sometimes it doesn't. I'll drive to work and that will be that. Going home, I park in the same 2 spots every morning, the same thing sometimes the system will activate, sometimes it won't.

When I stop at the Shell Station in LF and get a pack of smokes, every single time I stop there, the compressor comes on when I restart. If I stop at Fresh Market or Foodstuffs and forgo Shell.....nothing happens.

Point is, I understand that you have run into a litany of issues with your SLS, you will be paranoid for the first couple of months....watching, checking, worrying, wondering....I've been there. 6-10 months of farting around with this system and it leaving me stranded when the bags first went and then the compressor decided to finally die, with all of the slow leaks in between.

I think you are just suffering from some good 'ole paranoia and your system is fine. Just keep your ear open for when the compressor is running. You can hear the slight hum under the passenger footwell. Let it do its thing for the 8-10 seconds and then hit it.

Sudden Rear Air Suspension Dropped

Had no issues with X5 E53 air suspension, then after leaving vehicle for several days while away, came back and both sides were down. Did not pump back up when started, so used diagnostics to re-inflate, so pump is OK, stayed up for three weeks, then driver side went down, then passenger side followed if not driven for a day or so. What is strange is pass side will raise when engine started, but not the driver side. Can height sensor prevent one side from raising? What can prevent one side from raising, check valve possibly? It does not appear to even try to raise, as in if there was a leak in bag.

Thanks
