Anyone dealt with P0192 in 3.5i

My 2013 3.5i went into limp mode this morning, scanned with ISTA/D and got 002BDA = Rail pressure sensor, electrical: Short circuit to earth. Which tells me it has a fault with the ground. Either a chaffed wire or the sensor itself is dying.

Question here is if anyone has dealt with this and which did it turn out to be? Grounding of a wire or did the fuel rail pressure sensor actually fail?

I'll be checking the wiring this weekend (weather permitting) and went ahead and ordered a new sensor just in case. But am hoping someone or a few someone's have had this happen to them too and can provide historical insight.

(not that you need it..)

FWIW...the 'upper' wire should be the ground...see that "31" designation?

http://www.bosch-classic.com/media/e...eichnungen.pdf

31 is a ground, through the DME....

Nice pdf, eh? I had not seen it all in one place. Its a German standard, DIN 72552.

LOL yup, why put it all in one place? Thanks for those documents! Hope the replacement of the sensor is the solution as that would certainly be the easiest.

New sensor finally arrived and I hope I can get it install tonight or tomorrow if the weather allows. Now my damned '08 E70 is throwing codes again (I'll update that post too) and I had to pull my garage queen out to get to work today. That old E38 is STILL a blast to drive!

Still driving the E38, weather hasn't allowed me to replace that sensor and the '08 with her limp mode codes is driving me crazy too. It's still calling for DSC error even though I changed the right wheel speed sensor. But as I went through the repair docs in ISTA/D it's actually talking about the TPMS system. I've got the replacement antenna for that and hopefully that is the problem, but again now its been weather and time.

Oddly enough I never thought that a faulty TPMS would ever throw the car into limp mode. But hey, it's a BMW. Wish that write up that eliminated the TPMS and used the wheel speed sensors for FTM (Flat Tire Monitoring) had directions for using ISTA/D or ISTA/P. That write up is here: https://xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-forums/...s-ftm-e70.html

LOL - more the rain and now since that has stopped for a few days, work is keeping me from it too. Getting home too late and dark out doesn't help. It's parked on the street down from my house and since I have to pull this sensor off the injector rail, don't want to charge the fuel to move it. Or just too lazy. LOL

Well, finally got the sensor replaced. Found that to get to the sensor you need to remove the engine cover, MAF, intake tube, cowl covers and then the center and passenger partitions, plus the fresh air intake and filters.

Then just like changing the coils and plugs you can finally get to this sensor at the rear end of the fuel rail. Space makes it impossible to remove with regular open end wrench, but a pair of channel locks can get ahold of it well enough to remove and reinstall the new sensor. Checked the wiring while I was there and all all was intact.

Found my battery appears to be original (2013) so I'll accept that 6 years in service (7.5 since battery was manufactured) is long enough so replaced it too. Scanned with Carly after registering the new battery and found 3 codes, but only to the ASC/DSC, stability and one other that I have now forgotten.

Cleared the codes and seemed to not fully clear. Decided to take a drive and they cleared on their own completely within 30 yards from my driveway.

So far, so good! If you run into this P0192/002BDA = Rail pressure sensor, electrical: Short circuit to earth. Get a new sensor, get to the back of the fuel rail and replace it!
