Oil could be from ccv or just you had shut it down with that intake valve open so the oil dribbled down the intake into that cylinder. I've seen it with glow plugs... No 2 times the same plugs were oily, because it was sitting by the opened valve.
Carbon is normal since you run egr.

Haven't seen any rebuilds that match the price of 300-350 for the Bosch rebuilds. Someone might be selling used ones here or e90 post m57 forum.

As I understand, the injectors run at super high pressures and use a stack of piezoelectric elements to allow fuel to emit through very small spaces- hence any contamination in the fuel -or into the injector as they are rolling around in your box- can cause permanent issues. FWIW.

UPDATE:

Hey all, just heard back from the shop that was testing my injectors. Apparently 5 passed and are good and only 1 is completely dead. Is it possible that my car wasn't starting due to one injector being completely out? It was the Cyl #1 injector, the one that was coated with oil.

That is a nice looking report. Post up their name for future reference.

IMO it would not be a bad idea to prevent the motor from running if there is a dead/bad injector. Could destroy the motor.

However dunno if that is what the DDE does.....

Leak test hmm, if that injector was leaking down it would mess up the pressure to the other injectors.

If I recall correctly the DDE will shut down the car if even one injector is not functioning. I know that has been my experience in the past. Injector 5 failed and the engine wouldn't start, replaced it and it started. A year later injector 4 failed and the same thing happened. I also learned at that time, if you can afford it (and are doing the work) just replace all 6 when one goes. It takes no time to replace the injectors once you have everything torn apart.

If it's electrical, you can unplug the bad injector and it'll run on 5 cylinders.
I did that when my injector 5 was shorted on the common wire for bank 2 (4 5 6).

But this case he had a mechanical problem of leak down, where the injector was leaking to the return lines. That shows up as a rail pressure issue, because the pump can't make the pressure.

Thanks for all the advice! I'm getting the injectors back from the shop this Monday, and will update more info when I put everything back together. So what you're saying is if the injector is not functioning mechanically, then the fuel pressure goes back to the fuel rail, messes up the pressure for other injectors and causes the engine not to start? I did have a fuel rail code show up as soon as the X5 shut off while in motion. Wasn't able to start it up after it got towed back, and I did try to disconnect Cyl 1 injector connector. Hoping the new replacement injector will fix the issue.
