Check your alternator voltage before doing anything. I replaced the alternator a few months ago. Had issues starting in the middle of winter (negative F temps) but once it was up and running seemed to be fine, except occasional Christmas tree lights. Once it warmed up everything was fine, started and ran fine, no lights. Couple more months went by, got some errors while driving. Restart went away. Another month, Christmas tree lights up on my wife, and she wasn't able to start it again after work, jumped it, still Christmas tree lights, and this time with the jumper still connected I read voltage and it was low. Too busy to call a tow truck so went back over the weekend, jumped again and voltage was fine. Basically alternator (for whatever reason) was only charging intermittently. Christmas tree lights was the first sign something was wrong. Replaced the alternator and things have been fine since. It could've just been the voltage regulator but given the price and the miles on the original just replaced the whole thing.

Not saying it can't be the battery, but I'd check the alternator is fine before doing more work. If your first battery only made it 3 years, I guess getting 6 out of the second is possible.

Well - I can report this problem is not from the battery!

Replacement of the ATC-700 Transfer Case ECU solved the problem immediately. I found a pre-owned one on eBay for $190 shipped.

Thanks for closing the loop.

How did you decide that was it? Any further diagnostic data you could share?

Any idea why it failed? Wire harness, open connector, water intrusion, etc??

“The actuator motor gear is good (A700 case) and the motor was swapped but issues remained. Codes return immediately when cleared.”

This was the opening post of the thread - since it wasn’t the gear issue, and all electrical wires/connections looked good, the ECU was the next step.

As it was, I tried the battery replacement since it was getting “old” per the advice here, but it didn’t help. So I took an extra path not needed, but that route did help others with a similar problem.
