N55 2011 X5 Transmission failure at 51K miles

So, I thought it was bad enough that my turbo crapped at 40K

https://xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-forums/...40k-miles.html

I figured it was an anomaly, and paid close to $5K getting my turbo replaced. Now my tranny is toast. Caca. Adios. As Neil Young would say, PIECE OF CRAP!

I'm the 2nd owner. I've known the first owner for a long time. I have all maintenance records. Car was never abused by the original owner or me.

I'm happy for all of you on here who have 100K+ on the clock without issues.

Mine turned out to be.....wait for it.....(and I hope you're reading this, BMWNA):

A PIECE OF CRAP!

I currently own 5 bimmers. and have owned more than 20 over the years. I'm a BMWCCA member since 1991. Note to self: Don't buy a late model BMW out of warranty.

any idea what is actually bad? Or just the whole thing?

Reason I ask, lots of folks have had tranny issues that are fixed with valve body 'stuff'.... most BMW mechanics (dealers, indys) wont open the trans: it goes bad, it is all bad and needs total replacement.

I know you will want to vent and beat up on BMW, but there may be some helpful threads here and on BF.

I'm just documenting this for when the next e70 owner searches for "failed transmission e70". "Beat up on BMW"? BMW holds itself out as a premium brand. 51K miles on the clock. Transmission failure. "Beat up on BMW"?

What was the diagnosis that lead to "dead transmission". You didn't answer ard's question. Sometimes just having low fluid can cause failures... Or a 10 dollar rubber seal. You're jumping the gun here probably based on some dealer that only knows how to replace the whole unit.

This same transmission has been known to be robust in many other applications, not just bmw.

Interested in hearing more details about the failure as well. Would be helpful to know for anybody in a similar situation in the future.

There are no questions to be answered other than this car drove off the lot for $76,000. It's had two owners and been meticulously maintained its whole life. It has 51K miles on it. The transmission is KAPUT.

This is the only question:

Next time you go buy a $76K car, do you expect the tranny to take a shit at 51K miles? And did I mention the turbo crapped at 40K miles? Oh. yes. Yes I did.

such a pathetic and impotent poster. Just wanna badmouth BMW as if it matters.

And since BMW wont engage him, he will do battle with BMW owners as a sad proxy.

Pathetic

I love to criticize bmw with actual fails, like their crap designs that fail (roof drains, plastic partitions, stupid scr system that's overly sensitive). I too expect more from German engineering that costs 2x more than a regular brand.
However, you are sounding like a pundit. No mention of how it failed, just you probably had an issue and you believed the dealer that the trans is dead because they are idiots about transmissions. There was a guy from Europe that sounded like you and he loved his Toyota.

As mentioned, it sounds like you are complaining on a BMW forum vs. trying to figure out what happened. Without doing the latter, you'll go no sympathy regarding the former.

I was just going to let this go. But you know what? If I'm brand manager for BMW, Lexus, Infiniti, Mercedes, etc., I'm embarrassed about my brand.

Speak up ard, do you work for BMW?

Here's the story:

2 owner car. I've known the original owner for many years. Impeccable maintenance.

41K miles: Failed turbo. $4,600+ repair. BMW wanted $7.600+.

51K miles: Failed transmission diagnosed by BMW ($9K+ repair)

I ask you: Toyota, Infiniti, Lexus, BMW, Mercedes...any car that drives off the lot for $76K. Is transmission failure at 51K miles OK with you? BMW settled a class action for failed turbos on the N54.

Call me a pundit or impotent poster.

Go ahead. Defend that.
