I think I’m going to take your advice and stick with the parts I expect Tues. First, I just turned 51K miles so not even close to those numbers. There is no slippage or noises other than what I mentioned in my first post. I really don’t think I even need to do this and despite earlier comments, I’ve been beyond satisfied with this Indy for 20 years. Re: NJ It’s actually a beautiful state except certain cities like Newark, Camden, Trenton. We got beat up by Superstorm Sandy, but the shore is back to being great. If you enjoy the beach and the water, there are no syringes on the beach, just higher and higher taxes. Thus, we hope to spend Christmas 2020 in the Carolinas enjoying retirement and our 3 grand kids. Thanks again Ed

I got those parts when I looked at the sleeves on thectsc website. 6hp26 and 28 are the same w these sleeves. 6hp19/21 use different looking ones.
I searched the zf part numbers on fcp and ordered those. They have some kit with sleeves for the 26 but not sure if those part numbers match. |

Given the low mileage on my car, I think I can hold off doing anything else. The only remaining question is when you watch the YouTube video I referenced, and the guy takes out the Mechantronic unit, he states that another quart of fluid drains out. That seems like a lot just having the unit coming down. Does everyone experience that? ed in "it's gonna be another hot day Sunday" NJ

I didn't measure but yes there's fluid inside the mecha and some that sits behind the seals.
I'm dealing with 90v low voltage on a phase since Monday and coned is just incompetent and keeps delaying repairs. Now with the heat they are going to claim emergency for others. |

Hello Ed, and all fellow bmw’ists! This is my very first post/comment in this forum, but would like to share my experience with transmission service:
Bought my X5 4.8i last year, right away decided to do trans fluid change, randomly found a German auto repair shop who quoted $500 for the job. I didn’t ask details as to how and what they’re going to do... I should have. They just dropped the pan, put on a new one and refilled the fluid. That’s it, took them 30-40 minutes! I thought since he’s a German auto specialist, he’ll do it the proper way. Anyhow, I left that shop and will never go back. About 2-3 months later I had a small leak from the connector sleeve and from the pan. Recently found a good mechanic who specializes only on Bimmers. Recently replaced spark plugs, ccv hose, alternator, lower control arms, and redid the transmission service, this time the proper way, which includes replacing those bridge seal, mech seals and connector sleeves, replaced with proper zf fluid. My point is, if you’re going to do it, do it the right way the first time. Otherwise you’d be a fool who paid twice, like I did. Peace! |

I bought my X5 with 100K on the dash, and have no issues with the engine or transmission. It’s all about the maintenance, and the driver, of course. Curious to hear what you ended up doing with the car? Did you sell it or did bmw replaced your tranny under warranty? (It’s 100K miles, right?) anyway, would be great to get your update here! Good luck! |

How many miles were on your car at the time the first transmission service was done? I opted NOT to do the extra parts you reference because though it's a 2011, it only has 50K on the odo. If I had double or close to double i.e. 90-110K miles, I would have opted for it. But the consensus was at my mileage it wasn't necessary. So sometimes, you can avoid an expense, based on mileage. My wife's 04 325Ci Convertible has just turned 60K miles, and if I did all the changes based on age alone, I would have wasted a lot of money. BTW, have you ever sent you used oil out for inspection? I highly recommend it every 25K miles or so. You'll learn a lot about what's going on in your engine based on what elements are in the oil. Ed in It's 3 AM in NJ

I bought the X with 100K, it’s has 110 miles now. Previous owner/s never did a transmission fluid change, so it was way overdue. But the car didn’t have any jerking or abnormal shifting. I love the way it drives, like most X5 owners, of course. What kind of tires are you running on? Mine has stock 19” sport wheels, but looking to buy 20” sport wheels for even better handling and more aggressive looks. Oh, another “problem” I got is the idrive controller doesn’t wanna click when you tap it. I’ve seen some videos on YouTube on how to fix it. Will do that next and try to save $350 for a new one. Wish me luck. From the recent trip to Toledo, OH it did 21 mpg! For a 12 yrld SAV, not bad I would say! If you only got 50K on the dash, I guess you should be good with just a refill and replace pan, but do make sure the connector sleeve is in good shape, you don’t want fluid trickling down, if it’s no good, I’d pay extra to replace those, instead of paying for a full service after couple thousand miles, you know. Let me know if you have anyone who got extra set of 20” wheels.. just missed out on one beautiful 5 spoke M wheels on Craigslist with brand new tires.. |
