2011 e70 LCI xdrive30d (Australia) - vibration sound in cabin
Been lurking since the e53 days. I am racking my brains trying to figure out what this intermittent vibration sound coming from the engine bay/firewall area into the cabin. More noticeable in the drivers seat (right hand drive side). It comes and goes when stationary and in park, drive with the break on not noticeable when revving or accelerating. I’m just wondering if it could be anything else to check before I commit to ripping off the timing chain covers to inspect and do the dreaded job that is timing chains on the n57 diesel. I was thinking if it was a timing chain issue it would be more of a permanent thing? Or is it timing chain looseness failure perhaps in its infancy? Any insight would be appreciated Thanks guys |

Just for reference as I cannot get my phone to isolate the noise when recording.
It sounds like a quieter but same vibration as this - posted a couple years back with no response. https://xoutpost.com/bmw-sav-forums/...side-dash.html |

No haven’t started throwing parts at it. I took to mechanic and i couldn’t get it to do it (intermittent sound) and he was suggesting it would only be timing chain, and to take off covers and inspect..... I would have thought timing chain would be permanently making a sound if loose??

Id throw parts before ripping into timing chain covers! I mean that is some crazy advice- you couldnt elicit the noise, so he suggests chains?!?!
Noise the same in drive and Rev, with Brake on? (ie loading the driveline differently) I'll let others with better insights comment.... |

You are right
Under loading it goes away with Or with revs in neutral goes away |

Does yours have the vacuum controlled motor mounts?
https://www.newtis.info/tisv2/a/en/e...unting/QG2zsGH Wonder if it could be a bad vacuum hose? Dunno, just wondering.... |

In reverse is it quieter? You didn't mention trying that!

These vacuum controller engine mounts are new to me, will have to inspect when the weather clears up and report back - from what I’ve read it’s just a case of taking underbelly/engine guard off
Yes seems to be quieter in revers |
