Leaking from panoramic sunroof

Hi all,

I have a problem with my panoramic sunroof leaking which I believe has caused my SOS warning light to come on in my X5 (E70).

I have phoned around and no one seems to want to touch the sunroof so I'm thinking of fixing it myself. I'm not a mechanic by any stretch of the imagination but I have fixed a few things in the past in my older X5 such as the electric window winder.

Here is a pic of the rear window where I believe the leak is coming from. It could be other places too I'm not sure. Could it even be the outer seal? It was sodden with water when I first spotted it but since I've had the cover open it has seemed a lot drier but there was a single drop of water on the rail which worries me as I was sure it was coming through the obviously warped seal on the window.

It's the same on both sides. I can't see any issues from the front panel but it's possible I guess.

I've done a lot of searching and watching videos on how to remove but they always seem to miss the one part I need to know. Which I guess is do you think that replacing the rear glass panel will solve this leak? Is there a way to remove the rear panel without removing the front panel? To make things worse the sunroof won't open but the tilt/vent mechanism still works. My hope is to get the leak plugged and worry about the opening and closing later but I'm open to the idea of trying to get it working again if that's not too risky?

As for the SOS call failure message I believe the TCU can be coded out which I am up for doing but could only find advice for E60. Is this the same? I also read that replacing the TCU with same part number and SW and HW number might also work without coding. Any advice you could give would be much appreciated.

I forgot to mention that I have tried the reset procedure with the sunroof and trying to manually open it which I believe is done by removing the panel with the SOS button on it and using the hex key. It seemed to go up and down but wouldn't go back at all. It's like it's jammed.

I'm not sure I can be much help here, but a couple of questions:

  1. What codes do you have (I'm assuming you have some type of scanner)?
  2. Have you done a thorough visual examination from different angels to see if there's any type of blockage / lubrication needed?

I have a foxwell scanner. I will do another scan later and get the various fault codes. From memory one had KOMBI I think.

I have looked as much as I can with only the tilt/vent working. I couldn't see anything but my view was limited by not being able to get the sunroof open. I did manage to check the rear drains which looked clear to me. I can't get to the front drains.

I fixed the embedded youtube video link above.

When I first purchased my X, I had read a ton of nightmare type posts about the panoramic sunroof having all sorts of issues, so the first thing I did was clean and lubricate the rails and all gearing I could access and haven't had any issues since.

However, in the first month or so of ownership prior to doing that work there were a couple of times the roof acted oddly and required the reset procedure you mentioned, and even got stuck.

Thanks I will give it a watch. I also saw a video of an E70 being greased which maybe is all it needs but I suspect its jammed by something.

Here are the fault codes I have:

A670/present - FZD: Signal line, fogging sensor
E484/present - SMBF: K-CAN line fault
A1 A3/not present - CCC-ASK: Control-unit fault
E5C4/present - CID: K-CAN line fault
9CC5/present - FRM: Mirror heating, driver's side faulty
A559/not present - Instrument cluster: Supply was switched off (terminal 30g_f)
A554/present - KOMBI: No message (telephone)

Any ideas? I should mention also that there is no sound from the speakers from the radio or warnings etc. DAB, Bluetooth and TV modules don't seem to be working either.

I'm no expert, but this one error may be related:

A559/not present - Instrument cluster: Supply was switched off (terminal 30g_f)

Any issues with the battery? I'll insert the usual questions here:
  1. How old is the battery?
  2. Do you know if it's been registered to your vehicle?
  3. Any cranking issues (especially with the cold weather)?
  4. Any weird electronic behavior that you might have seen for a moment but then disappeared? (e.g. radio misbehaving, clock resetting)
Just a WAG, but my thoughts are the roof is leaking because it didn't close properly and is binding somewhere, which is why is won't open again. Possibly due to dirt/debris or something simple. I wouldn't go so far as replacing the glass till this possibility is ruled out. Your original post seems to infer the leak has caused the issue with the sunroof not working, but I'm thinking it's the exact opposite. I.e. fix the roof open/close and no more leak...

Please take everything I say with a giant grain of salt though. Thankfully, there are much more experienced and smarter forum members around, who may have better ideas.

Lastly, have you tried resetting the codes, taking it for a decent length drive and then seeing what codes are still active?

I think the battery is two years old now. It has been registered to the car. I did it myself with the foxwell. I did have weird errors in the past before putting in the current battery.

The car has been rarely used for a little while so it does make sense that the battery could be playing up. The issue with the SOS failure happened last Sunday after taking the car out for a 20 min drive to Ikea. When I got back in to drive home the error came on. The car before this wasn't driven since December and before that could have been a few months too. It seemed to start reasonably well.

The SOS error was what caused me to find the the leak in the first place. I took a look in the boot to have a look at the TCU module and noticed the foam padding near it was wet and then I noticed there was a water around the speaker on the pillar above. I pulled down part of the headlining and then saw all the water around the sunroof.

I vented/tilted the sunroof and closed it again so that perhaps has done something to improve the leak. I left the cover open last night and its no longer full of condensation/water drops there too.

I wonder whether a new battery or charging the current one would fix it? I mean the SOS error. I guess the sunroof is actually jammed.

I think it just got a bit worse. I opened up the cover on the front panel and it looks like the arms are cracked:
