I sourced an original owner X5 80k miles transmission for 1600 plus 400 in parts from FCP. I have added 25k miles since last year's replacement with no issues! I am currently at 162k right now. When I first drove the X5 with a working transmission, I was blown away how the transmission shift so smooth and quick for an automatic transmission. |

Hey - I usually feel like that before I start work on the X!
Keep at it! On the X5s I find that getting it back together is usually faster coz you know what the right order is and what goes where.

Fascinating thread and great work. I couldn't do it in my dream. All the best.
I did a full fluid flush Transmission, Differentials etc. at 95k. The tech who worked on it said it was a brilliant move, so much for lifetime fluid. Hope to get another 95k out of the X5

I am in doing the 3x drain fill and completed the 1st drain fill last weekend. I already have a new pan ordered and will replace it next weekend along with the 2nd drain/fill.
Just as a reference trans fluid at 99k miles (no record of it ever serviced): https://photos.google.com/share/AF1Q...hNUE82bDZQWnJB |

Hmm. Good on you, but once I get to messing with the fluids, I get it all done at once...drain, quick fill w old washers...drive to temp....then drain, pan, careful fill and new washers. I can see the potential benefit of an extended interval- perhaps to pick up debris?- but mine never goes that long |

1. I did not have a new pan last time so I just wanted to make sure some of the fluid is fresh and level is correct (was low by about 0.4L). 2. I set the correct level last time so next time will just measure what comes out and fill back the exact same amount (with engine idling) no need to warm up and drain the excess. I usually do a drain/fill on the transmission every other oil change on all of our vehicles. |

I'm certainly no expert, but other than adding a lot of opportunities for under/over filling or other human error mistake... I don't think it could hurt. Don't think it helps to do it that often either, ZF recommends 60k service intervals if memory serves. But again, I'm no expert.
