Wait... carplay is an available option in my E70?!? First I've heard of this.

Front buttons usually come with the CIC. But I don't know much about small screen versions so check out all the pictures you can find on ebay. And add a combox plug set to your shopping list. You will remove the pins from your TCU and or MULF and insert them into the new combox plug.

As an alternative to the combox, if you have usb in the armrest, you can simply use a tune2air. It will get you bluetooth music with steering wheel controls. https://www.amazon.com/Bovee-WMA3000.../dp/B0131P6P5E

Do you know if on E70 all I have to do is repin the plug or I need to extend the wiring as well? I believe on the E9x it needs to be extended.

I think I actually have this plug somewhere. It's used on cluster panels and on a bunch of other stuff on E46 and E39.

I have a USB in the glovebox. Combox sounds like a better option. A bit more expensive, but more OEM and less dangling wires.

There was no CarPlay option on the E70. What people are proposing here is to install the NBT system instead of CIC. First X5 with NBT was the F15, which had the CarPlay option.

Most E70 do not need the combox wiring extended. My 2009 had both the needed mulf and tcu wires on the front side of the component stack. My friends 2011 had tcu facing front and mulf facing rear. The wiring still reached but it was not pretty. For the antenna side wires. only the white USB and black bluetooth antenna need to be connected. Open the hatch in the rear and post a picture.

USB in the glovebox has nothing to do with a combox. That USB hooks to the cic to update maps and upload music to the hard drive. USB in the arm rest connects to the MULF or combox in the hatch. That is where a tune2air would need to hook up. If you don't have an armrest usb don't worry. It is not needed as music streams over bluetooth once you add a combox.

And there are plenty of aftermarket carplay options out there. Just not a factory one for CIC.

Photo attached. MULF and TCU wires facing the same way.

Yeah, I understand that. I was saying that I'd rather go COMBOX route than tune2air for Bluetooth audio. Now the question is, is it worth looking for the Gen 2 COMBOX with 4g or since I'm not planning on subscribing to BMW Connected Drive 2g would be fine.

2g combox is fine. 4g are pretty hard to find used. Your tcu and mulf are facing opposite directions but it probably will fit if you get creative. The MULF power/aux wiring (big blue connector) is facing rearward and the USB is going forward. The TCU BT antenna is facing rearward and the power/mic (big white connector) is facing forward. Combox will have the BT antenna and USB on one end and power/aux in/mic in (and most fiber) on the other.

Just wondering how does the project going, I'm playing with the idea of replacing my E71 09MY CCC for either CIC or NBT EVO, don't like that Andro sticking up over torpedo.
Can't so far find what I need to get for the project. I would like to fit into $800 in parts.
I have the rearview cam, HUD, TV, 6 CD changer, SatNav Pro, I'd say the lot for the year 2009 Aus supply, as stock install. But it is out of date. Maps are 2010Aus which is antic, according to it, I have already driven over the bush, river, and even ocean
I have a son who is an auto year 2 apprentice who can install and may as well get cheap second-hand parts. He obviously can get the car into his shop for coding. I need a list of what is required. I was told: "tell me exactly what you need found and done. I've got no time for research. You have all day for it. Your 4x4, you do the research" So much respect for old fella huh!
Thank you to everyone who will decide to through a penny

Ncsexpert can tell you the version. If it is not C1A, you need in ICOM tool and big power supply to flash the cic to the latest version. https://mega.nz/folder/0l5XkCja#hhmwooDMxmL52IOw8P9ZDg

Bluetooth audio will come from a Combox retrofit. E series, don't get an F, combox sell for a little over $100 on ebay.

I don't think you need a new screen cable. The pink connectors look the same between big and little screens. But you will need a USB cable to update the maps. It does not need to be the expensive BMW one mounted in the glovebox. Generic ebay ones work fine. You can also use it for the one-time bluetooth update on the combox. https://www.ebay.com/itm/Car-Aux-in-...4AAOSwjZFd9Ek0

You can go aftermarket for the gps antenna or get an aftermarket fakra c cable to hook to the shark fin. Message some of the ebay vendors and they can make you a 5m cable with female fakra c right angles on each end for about $20.
