A Tale Of (Two) Three Indies & A Dealership – Finale Finally!!!

We left our tale with the E70 in the shop of indy #2. I dubbed him “I’m just about to…” because for a period of five long weeks that was all he told me; what he was about to do. On six occasions it was the exact same task. As I was not paying the bill I held my fire but at the start of week six I called indy one and asked him when the clown was actually going to look at the car. He EXPLODED! He called indy two and told him to get it ready as a flat bed was on the way to pick it up.
That duly happened and indy three entered the game. Vehicle was diagnosed a week later with a broken ring(???) cylinder 6. This may or may not have been correct but it did prompt indy one to call me and tell me a replacement engine was needed. He spent a week trying to get a good used, low mileage engine to no avail. Then he was directed to a specialist re-builder about 500 miles away. Re-built engine was ordered and then the check disappeared in the mail. Another lost week. Indy one had to wire the money and the engine build started. Two weeks or so later it was loaded on the truck and the weather let lose on us in this area with freezing fog and major snow. About a week and a half after the weather settled down again the engine was delivered and the swap process started.
That entails a 37 man hours process during which every stupid thing that could happen happened. e.g. Original crank position sensor was leaking oil. BMW parts supplied a new sensor and it was fitted. It was faulty. Had to remove intake, starter etc. to R&R it. All the modules had to be realigned to each other and the computer expert had to do it twice. Engine was then fired up and sounded good but CEL was on. High Pressure Fuel Pump was only putting out 800psi. A new pump was ordered from local BMW dealer and fitted Friday 19. Engine was fired up and CEL was still on!! Turns out the injector numbers did not line up with the computer. Swap injectors around but CEL would not go away. So March 22 BMW got the car.
March 24 I called BMW Service and was informed they had found a defective HPFP. Two new BMW parts ordered from local BMW dealer faulty. New pump was ordered and it was to come in the next day. I do not know just what problem BMW are having but March 25 and the pump was still to arrive and be fitted. When pushed the SA was tentatively optimistic it was the problem but… So the wait goes on.
Finally! Monday March 29 I called the dealership and was told the vehicle had been ready since Saturday. They were supposed to call indy one, as he was paying the bill, and arrange pick up then call me. I called indy one myself about 45 minutes later and dealership was still to call him. He called and left a message. I called two hours later and dealership was still MIA. I was put on hold and indy one called in again. He came back about three minutes later and was not a happy camper. He had been told the total for the work. They tripled the cost of the pump and charged 5 hours for what his own techs take two hours to do. No mention of or apology for the faulty pump they sold him then charged him to replace. In other words typical $tealer.
So we are leaving and supposed to pick up the car this afternoon. We had to look at pictures to remember just what it looked like. I hope my wife remembers how to drive it has been so long LOL.
Pick up completed. At last we have both our cars in the garage after 5 months.

Seems to have come out of nowhere....

Any idea if it really was a broken ring?

Feels like there should be another 4 pages of detail, to fill in the..rest of the story.

This all started with gaskets right? What a mess. I bet everyone involved in this, excepting the dealer, is unhappy.

Glad you got the X5 back, but what an ordeal.

New VC with gasket, OFH gasket, OC gasket. Because the OFH gasket was changed an oil & filter change was performed. No really mind blowing engineering in any of it but...
Indy and dealer are now not on speaking terms. Insurance company picked up most of the tab.
With me selling the '01 and having to wait 6 months to find the replacement we spent most of 2020 with only one car.
Tell me, how do you like the HUD?

We'll never buy another modern BMW without it. The wife's E70 has it (first car we had with it). I am retrofitting it to our E61 wagon eventually (have all the parts), and we enjoy it even more in the F15 where it has more functionality. It's 100% a must have from now on. Especially for my wife who never looks at the gauge cluster. She's probably in the majority of current drivers now. Nobody checks the cluster for vehicle status nowadays.

Nice that insurance picked up the tab. Even nicer attorneys did not need to get involved. I guess they covered it under your comprehensive?

The repair facility's "we goofed up" insurance (Malpractice) were really very good about everything. It was the wait leading up to them getting involved that was the worst part. The insurance called me once the claim was put in, heard my tale of woe, suggested a rental on their tab and cut the claim check to their insured within a week to get the ball rolling.
This was a very "spendy" five months that could have been shortened with hindsight. I was just the cork in the storm getting tossed to and fro without any control.
No lawyers were hurt during this period.
Now HUD retro: What is involved?

Nice that shop insurance covered it. I'm surprised the owner was willing to initiate a claim. If that's how that works.

The HUD retrofit requires the dash, the HUD projector itself, coding, and associated wiring. I actually (at my wife's direction shockingly) bought an entire e60 550i which came equipped with HUD, HK sound, and lots of other goodies. Had been hit in the front and I was there for the black heated front sport seats. He wanted $300 for those and the wife said to just buy the whole thing.

It runs... so I guess an n62 V8 drivetrain and RWD swap is in the future for the wagon. Nice to have a project in the driveway that she can't get mad at me for.

Thats unfortunate.

The number of times ive heard of shops stepping up for catastrophic errors approaches zero. Did it fail in their possession? Usually they get it back to you and 'welp, just bad luck I guess'.

UPDATE!

It ain't over 'til its over.

Well, of course, we could not get away that "easy" could we? STUPID OIL LEAK!!!!!
I drove the car for first today and apart from the oil leak we have a buzz underneath. Sounds the just like when we lost an exhaust hanger.
I had hoped that a week with the stealer would have ironed out these problems but here we go again. Tomorrow afternoon appointment with indy one to try and stop the engine dropping vital fluids all over the garage floor and to eliminate the annoying bumble bee buzz as we drive down the road.

Update.
I had a more intense inspection after my cursory look earlier at the "oil". I think it is power steering fluid. It was below "MIN" so I topped it up. The buzz may have been the pump! The steering was heavy but I thought that was just in comparison to my electric rack.
