Alright, now I'm thinking it's the oil pump.

This thread helped me ultimately figure out it was my oil pump....

https://www.bimmerfest.com/threads/o...on-n52.955944/

Out of curiosity, has it ever shredded a serpentine belt that you know of?

AM.

Credit to AM and Andrew for nailing this one I think. It definitely sounds like the oil pump.

AM- good question. I'm following your line of thought. Not that I know of, I bought the car in September with 83K miles and no records (ugh). I can check the CarFax history for clues.

I suppose it is possible it sucked in some belt in the past, damaging the oil pump, but escaping engine death. It doesn't have any lifter noise, oil pressure lights or other issues that I can tell.

BMW calls this noise "normal" on the 50i X5's. Yet they replace pumps under warranty in the past. I wonder if this noise is safe to continue driving.

I drove mine for quite a while after noticing the noise (15K mi?), so I don't think catastrophic failure is imminent. Did you try the screwdriver to the oil filter housing area? I think that's the tell-tale, as there's nothing mechanical inside the OFH, but for some reason, the oil pump sound emanates to there.

Yes I'll give it a listen with the scope when it arrives Thursday.

Did you end up replacing your pump? Noise still gone?

Wow, didn't know this was a thing with the N52. Will keep an ear out for the oil pump I guess. Fingers crossed for you that the stethoscope reveals it's the vacuum pump.

Ours is nice and quiet at 195k miles... though it suffers another typical N52 problem. The front 4 cylinder head bolts have sheared so it leaks oil profusely and has been parked for 8 months while I clear other things from the queue to get it in the garage.

Yes, I bought a low mileage used pump from a wrecker and installed it. No more pump noise. I assume my pump issue was due to belt ingestion, but not necessarily. After replacing the vanos adjuster unit and the oil pump, my vanos system finally worked properly and average MPG went up about 2 along with much more spunky power!

If you want to check for belt ingestion, drain the oil, remove the oil level sensor, explore the oil pan area using a borescope (mine attaches to my phone - $20). You can check my thread on the E83 forum I referenced earlier.

Great advice about the borescope. I'm not sure I'll have time to do that in the next few months due to time constraints.

I used the stethoscope today to listen to the oil filter housing and surrounding surfaces. The issue here is that we have two potential items causing the noise: oil pump (maybe sound travels up the OFH) and the vacuum pump, which is right in the same exact area below the OFH.

Distinguishing the sound between those two components in the same area seems challenging. I personally cannot hear much of a difference.

I do hear the whine best when the probe is on the alternator surface though. For those just joining us, the alternator is not the issue; confirmed by removing serp belt.

You can't stop the oil pump but can you stop the vacuum pump? I don't know how it works.

Also use an FFT program you will be surprised to see how much easier it is to track a sound when you can follow a frequency spike.

I'm hearing a similar noise and thought it was the PCV valve on the valve cover that's not sealed any longer.

This is how my X5 sounds:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H_B3WQsiboU

3.0si, 190k miles

Update 1/17:
Took the valve cover off to install below along with a new gasket kit. Alternator-like noise is gone. My idle seems to be a bit rough though. I might throw new coil packs at it. I've shifting into neutral when the idle is too rough to ignore. It doesn't seem to have issues when not idling. FWIW, I have aftermarket vanos solenoids that I installed to get rid of an engine code.
