Dc-dc charger

Hi gang I have a ctec dc-dc charger which was wired directly to cranking battery via a fused lead and Andersen plug which I connected to the charger this set up to charge a deep cycle battery whilst driving the ctec protected the cranking battery this kept the battery charged for use when camping etc.
My question is can I use the 12v outlet in the rear as a supply source for a dc-dc charger? It would make life simpler rather than going directly to the crank battery and dealing with the smart alternator
Cheers keith

You *shouldn't* connect directly to the battery bypassing the IBS.

I'm not sure if the voltage at the "12v" plug is direct from the battery or regulated. If it's 12v regulated it's not going to charge a battery but if it's vBat it would work and on e70 it's switched with the key so won't kill your battery when not running.

So: measure the voltage and confirm it's 13.6 ish when engine is running and you should be good to go.

Thanks Andrew I assume that it is regulated on with the ignition as I sometimes run a fridge from it and it turns off when the car is not running. Excuse my ignorance but what is vBat?cheers Keith

"voltage" (of the) "battery"

Regulated means controlled to a specific value eg 12v.

Switched by the key is a somewhat more accurate way to describe. (it's crazy more complicated than that I'm sure 3-4 computers are involved between the key and the outlet in the trunk).

Thanks Andrew that makes sense I will check the input specs of the ctec and the outlet.
My previous setup was in a land rover disco and worked well for my needs as the battery was removable not fixed in vehicle which allowed useage on the boat and camping etc

Seems logical that if the Ctek output exceeds the DC drain it would work as long as the DC source is constantly live. Which DC-DC model do you have?
