E70 tire choices - flavor of the day?
I'm considering three options for standard 255/55R18 wheels (yes, how dull!) and would like some users opinions. The choices are (not in any order):
Pirelli Scorpion Verdes are coming off - they were OK, wasn't super impressed. The all-stock X5d has 175,000 miles on it, in great shape thanks to the attentions of an excellent local mechanics workshop. Most driving is the usual - local errands, a couple of long treks 2-3 a year with a light trailer, a few 500 mile interstate runs & a few opportunities for fun stuff but not often. South Louisiana is extremely hot, it rains quite a bit, and is below freezing only a few days a year. Generally the road surfaces are somewhere between poor and terrible, with a few pleasant surprises. Allegedly, the X5 might have exceeded the speed limit by a considerable margin once or twice, oh OK regularly, so higher speed stability/control etc is important. Being old, poor and cheap, decent mileage is a requirement - my days of changing tires after 12,000 miles on a 911 are long gone! Thanks in advance... I was a big Michelin Primacy fan with the E53 and recently went with the Pirelli Scorpions on the E70 because they were a lot cheaper and I was replacing some really crappy Cooper tires but if I had to do it again I would have went with the Michelins because I think they are a bit quieter and ride a bit nicer. I'm actually going to have a look to see if I can 17" wheels onto the E70.

Pay for it because they are expensive, or short-lived, or...?

Yeah, I mostly purchase from Sam's the Pirellie tires can't go too wrong there. However, is somewhat soft but the roads here a good and my driving has declined considerably since COVID.... pretty much similar to your own level judging from what you've indicated.

Did you find they wear very quickly?

I would have expected them to last longer but I did make 2, thousand mile trips that summer....soft but quiet...I like quiet.

The E70 35d we bought a few months ago has the Pirellis on it (but they are in 255/50/19 size). I think the PO said they have about 40k miles on them but they have plenty of tread left. For a crappy all-season tire they seem to be long-lasting at least.
