Warning to parents about remote entry (my daughter was locked in my brand new x5)

Hey all, It seems I have my second technical issue with my new x5! I threw my purse in the back, strapped my 3 year old daughter into the car seat and walked around to get in, like I've done hundreds of times. The car doors locked somehow and would not open. The car alarm started going off. I immediately flagged down a lady in the parking lot and used her phone to call the dealer who connected me with bmw assist. After two tries and an hour I finally was furious with their futile attempts to release my now horrified and crying daughter. I called 911 and the police arrived just as my husband showed up with a spare key. The remote lock is still not functioning properly (it locks when I touch the handle but does not unlock) and my dealership cannot fit me in for a week. Needless to say, if my daughter is locked in again I am contacting a lawyer.

I wish someone had told me that this had been happening. When I first spoke with bmw assist, they were like "oh, yeah, we've been getting calls like this" Hello! What if it was 100 degrees outside or my girl was a newborn baby? I'm not even sure the police could have gotten it open without breaking the window. Of course I've learned my lesson to never throw my purse in until I'm in the car. But this should have never happened.

Sorry for the long post, but I had to vent! And warn all parents about this possiblility!

J

Sorry to hear of this incident...It seems that BMW electronics are once again, not ready for prime time.

Glad your daughter is OK. I guess you had your keys in your bag?

thanks, she's recovered nicely (icecream helped), but I'm furious!

yes, until this occured I never even got my keys out of my purse! I could just touch the handle, the door would unlock... touch it again and it would lock. Push a button to start the car. All without fumbling through my giant mom purse! A very nice feature, but after less than a month it's already broken!

As a parent I can only imagine how frightening this would be, glad you were able to finally get her out. How did the doors lock automatically?
It seems if you hired a lawyer though, the judge would only ask you why you put your keys inside the vehicle before entering it…BMW surely does not recommend this procedure w/ the comfort access option.
BTW- did BMW explain why BMW Assist could not open the doors?

Sorry to hear. Seems like you do not have comfort access. This kind of thing will never happen if you have comfort access. Some people hide the spare at another place in the car. But still BMW assist should have opened it right away.

I remember reading somewhere that a guy with comfort access(or whatever Acura calls it) on Acura put his stuff in trunk but the trunk would not close. Frustrated with it, he starts driving to dealer and half-way remembers that he left the keyfob in trunk. Keyfob out and bingo.

I may be wrong but BMW assist doesn't open doors. I appreciate how trumatic this must have been. So here's a suggestion. This issue can be prevented by doing what many of us have done and thats hide a key outside of your vehicle that can be accessed during this kind of emergency. Do it today.

And no i won't tell you where i hid mine.

I do have comfort access but it malfunctioned. It has not worked properly since that day I can lock the doors, start the car, without getting my keys out. But cannot unlock it. My car is 7 weeks old

She said..."The remote lock is still not functioning properly (it locks when I touch the handle but does not unlock)"

this indicates Comfort Access.

But in either case, DONT put your keys inside the car if you have a child. All I can figure is the kid hit the remote button, or maybe when she "threw" her purse in the car the button was hit causing the doors to lock
