"How Do You Make a 4.8 Non-Sport More Muscular?"
My wife loved the 4.8 test drive but does not want the sport suspension. I have shown her pictures of 4.8's with sport wheels (20's) and the aero kit and that's the look she wants; but not the ride of the sport suspension. Can I get the aero kit and larger wheels without the sport package? Last edited by CGSTL; 06-11-2007 at 09:13 AM. |

Its not impossible.
The style 214 ("honeycomb") wheels can be purchased either from the dealer or can be done privately as well, try forums or online auction sites, though it might be tougher to get them privately. bet you there are more people who want to keep em than give em away.
Anyway, once you get the wheels, it is Crucial that you get the wider fenders for the extra width that the 20's come with (legal issues. if you don't want to get pulled over every three miles )Local laws may vary but usually it is illegal to drive with wheels sticking further out than the fenders (certainly in Canada anyway). You can get the extra-wide fenders from the dealer and they will install it for you. Be aware though, I've heard that they are not cheap for what they are. P.S. the 20" tires only come in P rated runflats (Dunlops from the dealer anyway) and they are summer only. if you live in a colder climate, you might need to have another set of wheels for winter. As far as i know, no one makes all-season runflats for the sizes yet, especially for the ph(f)at rear ones (Maybe never? who knows). The performance runflat tires will cost you over 400 each to replace, so tire insurance is a reasonable option IMO. BUt other than that, how can you resist those sweet honeycomb wheels! Good luck! Sorry to drag on but do you not like the ride with the adaptive drive on sport mode or even with the adaptive drive off ("comfort mode setting")on the sport package suspension? I know that adaptive drive is included in with the sport package in US models. I think I find the comfort mode with the sport package a bit more refined and smooth than the one without the sport package. |

I believe you can also get the aluminum look lower grille to replace the non-sport one. That isn't a problem. Aero Kit is also not a problem.

You are going to find that the 20 inch wheels are going to replace some of that harsh ride you might be attributing to sports suspension.
Has she been in a 4.8 sports with 19 inch wheels? Cheers

I am also getting a 4.8 with out the sport package but with the aero kit(not 100% on what wheels I'll be getting though), my 01 has it and I hate it, waaayyyy to bumpy but its great when going around turns at 95 but I dont do that every day and the roads around here are aweful

I've read people on here saying that the non-sport package (no adaptive drive) ends up actually being a rougher ride. I have a 4.8i with sport package and 20" wheels and have been very pleasantly surprised at how smooth the car rides with a sport suspension and low profile tires. Handles bumps much smoother than other cars I've owned and driven with similar profile tires and sport suspensions.
If you haven't already, I would suggest driving both setups (20" wheels with and without sport package) and then decide. |

The sport suspension on the E70 is chalk and cheese in comparison to the E53. The bumpiness has gone in the E70.

If you haven't yet purchased your X5, I would drive a Sport Pkg 4.8i. I too was thinking I didn't want a sport pkg x5 after driving my 4.4i E53 for a few years, but this E70 is a totally different animal! The ride is improved 100x and in fact, the sport pkg car rides as good, if not better than a non-sport E70. I would certainly encourage you to test a sport pkg E70, especially if you plan to get the 20" wheels and aero kit.

Will do! The only problem is supply. I have 4 dealers within 30 minutes of me and none of them have a 4.8i with a sport package... Collectively, they have about 12 3.0's and 3 4.8's in stock.
