X5 exterior mirrors question - wide angle or not?

I recently drove a friends 2007 328i sedan (E91) and noticed that his exterior driver side mirror was not the USA standard flat mirror, but the European style (my term) mirror that is split 2/3 flat and 1/3 (the outermost part) convex, which results in a much larger angle of view and almost totally eliminates the blind spot. The passenger side exterior mirrow BTW is the standard USA "objects are closer..." My only guess why BMW did this was because the mirrors are so small in the first place that a standard flat mirror would be a joke. My question is this, does the E70 X5 come with standard flat mirrors or the euro wide angles ones (in other words, is BMW starting a trend)? I know for a fact that the E53 X5 never came with wide-angle mirrors in the USA at least.

it comes with normal USA mirrors.
The mirrors on my SAAB are as you described, and I really can't tell the difference.

I love the European market convex mirrors, really helps with the blind spots.

You may want to investigate ordering the convex mirror panels if you really like them, all you'll have to do is get the part numbers for the driver's and passenger's side mirrors.

When my E36 M3 was new and was a street car, someone posted on an M3 board the part numbers and they were direct replacement pieces - would assume it still is the case with the X5 mirrors since it would not make sense for BMW to use different housings and attachments in different markets?

They are direct replacements, just massively expensive. The ones for an E53 X5 run around $300 or so each which is crazy. A 2nd best option is to use the SAE blindzone setting recommendation which is what I do.

BTW I think they take some getting used to, I only drove the car for an hour or so but definitely felt a little dizzy from looking at the mirror.
